Embedded Systems Engineer

Reports To: Director, Embedded Systems & Controls

Department: Engineering, Location: Hauppauge, NY

What You Will Do

Support the design, development, implementation, testing, and documentation of firmware and software for high voltage power supplies in all markets.

• Interfacing and supporting our global engineering community as needed.

Responsibilities

Technical

• Support project planning for firmware/software development needs.
• Hands‑on support of firmware and software design for HVPS. Languages used include C, Verilog, VHDL, Assembly, C#, VB6, Java, WPF, Linux; firmware developed on RTOS.
• Interface with peers in Engineering to implement features described in product and application requirements.
• Prepare all technical documentation such as circuit and block diagrams, test reports, manuals, technical reports, release documentation.
• Review and interpret internal/external customer requirements.
• Improve the firmware and software release process, including use of revision control systems such as Tortoise SVN.
• Conduct continuous research of latest embedded systems concepts (DSP, MCU, FPGA, CPLD, SOM).

• Support development of engineering plans for current and future products based on company objectives.

• Seek guidance and mentoring to fully understand hands‑on execution of Embedded Systems projects, including requirement analysis, technical approach, project planning, risk assessment.
• Support product development design reviews and provide inputs and documentation for design changes, specifications, and releases.

What You Need

• Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Electrical Engineering and at least 3 years of experience in Embedded Systems.
• Understanding of design and development of FPGA code using Verilog or VHDL.
• Fundamental knowledge of digital systems: ADCs, DACs, UART, RS‑485, RS‑232, embedded Ethernet, USB, microcontrollers, DSPs, RAM, SRAM, EEPROM, low‑voltage power supplies, PWM devices, discrete logic, FPGA.
• Experience with emulators, debuggers, JTAG, IDEs, and design/verification tools.
• Some exposure to advanced engineering tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSIM.
• Basic skills in developing design documentation for customers.
• Support for design verification testing and documentation.
• Passion for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams (sales, marketing, operations, quality, supply chain) to drive value creation.

Compensation & Benefits

Estimated salary range: $96,000 – $131,000, plus a full benefits package. This position requires on‑site presence at Spellman headquarters in Hauppauge, NY.
