Job summary

DoorDash is seeking an Embedded SW Test Engineer to own how we prove our Embedded SW is trustworthy. You will build HIL benches, automated test suites, and fault-injection campaigns to catch defects before they reach fielded hardware.

You’ll bridge embedded software, hardware, and test automation, partnering with firmware, electrical, and systems engineers on fault management, verification, and bring-up of new boards.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years in embedded software test, firmware verification, or embedded reliability engineering.
  • Strong Python (test automation, tooling) and working C/C++ for reading and instrumenting Embedded SW.
  • Hands-on experience testing bare-metal or RTOS firmware on ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers (STM32 or similar); understanding of interrupts, timing, and clock-level behavior.
  • Experience building or operating hardware-in-the-loop test setups.
  • Comfortable with lab instruments: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, debuggers/JTAG-SWD (e.g. pyOCD, OpenOCD, J-Link).
  • Familiar with embedded buses/protocols: CAN / CAN-FD, UART, I2C, SPI.
  • Git, CMake, and CI systems (GitHub Actions, Buildkite, or similar).
  • Schematic reading; comfort with a soldering iron.
  • Thrive in a high-integrity, fast-paced, safety-critical engineering environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build automated HIL (and SIL) test benches - combining real target hardware, simulation, and custom fixtures - to validate firmware under realistic and worst-case conditions.
  • Own firmware regression as a reliability gate: integrate test suites into CI/CD so every change is automatically exercised on hardware.
  • Design and run fault-injection campaigns (sensor faults, bus dropouts, power anomalies, motor-out) and verify the firmware's fault-management and safety-interlock responses.
  • Build test tooling and instrumentation: signal injection, bus (CAN/UART/I2C/SPI) traffic generation and monitoring, telemetry capture, and automated log analysis.
  • Turn flight-test and field data into a test-site-as-regression framework — reproduce in-service issues (including on third-party platforms) on the bench and lock them down with tests.
  • Contribute to DFMEA and root-cause investigations from the firmware side; drive corrective actions and track firmware reliability metrics.
  • Contribute to manufacturing / bring-up test suites for new boards and subsystems.

Job description

We are looking for an Embedded SW Test Engineer to own how we prove our Embedded SW is trustworthy. You will build the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) benches, automated test suites, and fault-injection campaigns that catch defects before they reach fielded hardware — and turn field and test data back into regression coverage. You focus on firmware behavior, fault handling, and system-level robustness rather than structural or environmental qualification.

This is a high-ownership role bridging embedded SW, hardware, and test automation. You partner with firmware, electrical, and systems engineers on fault management, verification, and bring-up of new boards.

What you'll do
  • Design and build automated HIL (and SIL) test benches - combining real target hardware, simulation, and custom fixtures - to validate firmware under realistic and worst-case conditions.
What we're looking for
  • 8+ years in embedded software test, firmware verification, or embedded reliability engineering.
  • Strong Python (test automation, tooling) and working C/C++ for reading and instrumenting Embedded SW.
  • Hands-on experience testing bare-metal or RTOS firmware on ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers (STM32 or similar); understanding of interrupts, timing, and clock-level behavior.
  • Experience building or operating hardware-in-the-loop test setups.
  • Comfortable with lab instruments: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, debuggers/JTAG-SWD (e.g. pyOCD, OpenOCD, J-Link).
  • Familiar with embedded buses/protocols: CAN / CAN-FD, UART, I2C, SPI.
  • Git, CMake, and CI systems (GitHub Actions, Buildkite, or similar).
  • Schematic reading; comfort with a soldering iron.
  • Thrive in a high-integrity, fast-paced, safety-critical engineering environment.
Nice to have
  • Zephyr RTOS (devicetree, Kconfig, west) or a comparable RTOS.
  • Reliability methods: DFMEA, fault-tree/RBD analysis, root-cause, reliability metrics.
  • Safety-critical or regulated-domain testing (aviation/UAS, automotive, medical); familiarity with standards (DO-178/DO-160, MIL-STD).
  • Battery management (BMS), motor control, or power-electronics test experience.
