Job summary

Blue Origin seeks an Embedded Software Engineer for a remote-controlled rover project (Honeybee Robotics). You will develop and validate embedded software for a planetary science rover, with emphasis on robust autonomy and fault recovery.

The role requires 3+ years of hands-on embedded software experience, proficiency in C/C++, sensor drivers, and experience with RTOS environments and space-flight standards. Collaboration across engineering and product teams is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in CS, Robotics, CE, or EE.
  • 3+ years hands-on software development for PC or embedded.
  • Proficient in bare-metal C/C++ development.
  • Proficient in unit testing and testing frameworks.
  • Proficient in writing drivers for sensors.
  • Basic understanding of electromechanical systems (motors, actuators, controls).
  • Experience with autonomous safety‑critical fault recovery code.
  • Proven experience with reliable software architectures for critical systems.
  • Proficiency with Git version control.
  • Understanding of Ethernet, USB, CAN, SPI, I2C protocols.
  • Background in space flight avionics applications.
  • Familiarity with automated testing and CI practices.
  • Ability to read schematics and perform basic hardware debugging.

Position Overview

Embedded Software Engineer – Remote Controlled Rover (Honeybee Robotics).

Develop embedded software for a remotely controlled rover, supporting planetary science and ISRU solutions. Passion for spaceflight mission required.

Responsibilities
  • Lead efforts in coding, testing, and validation of vehicle control software.
  • Manage software field deployments and provide on‑site and remote support to customers.
  • Work with stakeholders to derive and own software system requirements and schedules.
  • Evaluate and identify improvements to system design with a focus on robust autonomy.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, product and program managers to drive new product development from concept to production.
  • Write requirements and specification documents.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • More than 3 years of hands‑on software development experience for PC or embedded platforms.
  • Proficient in bare‑metal application development using C/C++.
  • Proficient in applying testing frameworks and conducting unit tests.
  • Proficient in writing drivers for various types of sensors.
  • Basic understanding of electromechanical systems (motors, actuators, controls).
  • Experience crafting autonomous safety‑critical fault recovery code.
  • Proven experience with reliable software architectures for critical systems.
  • Proficiency with Git version control.
  • Understanding of digital communication protocols (Ethernet, USB, asynchronous serial, CAN, SPI, I2C).
  • Background in space flight avionics application.
  • Familiarity with automated testing methodologies and continuous integration practices.
  • Familiarity reading circuit schematics and performing basic hardware debugging tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Operational control of a remotely controlled mission with large latencies.
  • Experience building and working with GDS or other Command & Control systems.
  • Familiarity with vision‑based autonomy and hazard avoidance.
  • Python scripting skills.
  • Background in developing software for vehicles.
  • Experience working with sensors and camera systems.
  • Proficiency building maintainable and versatile multithreaded and multi‑process applications in an RTOS environment.
Base Pay

CA applicants: $164,652.00 – $230,512.80
