Embedded Software Engineer - C/C++, Microprocessors & Hardware
Location

Germantown, MD - Hybrid, 4 days onsite per week

Salary

$125,000-$155,000; additional flexibility may be available for highly qualified senior candidates.

Citizenship and Sponsorship

Candidates must be either a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident (Green Card holder). Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Must Have the Following
  • Embedded C/C++
  • Microcontrollers/Microprocessors
  • Board Bring-Up
  • Hardware/Software Integration
  • Linux

Our growing client is looking for a hands-on Embedded Software Engineer who enjoys working close to the hardware. This is not primarily an FPGA development role. The ideal candidate is an embedded software engineer who writes C/C++ for microcontrollers, microprocessors, soft processors, or similar hardware platforms and is comfortable working directly with boards in the lab.

The target is a mid-level engineer with approximately 4+ years of relevant experience, although stronger senior-level candidates will also be considered.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, debug, and test embedded software using C and C++.
  • Develop software for microcontrollers, microprocessors, soft processors, and other hardware-based computing platforms.
  • Work directly with engineering boards during initial bring-up, integration, testing, and debugging.
  • Develop software that interfaces between low-level hardware and Linux-based host systems.
  • Participate in hardware/software integration for PCIe-based devices and server platforms.
  • Develop Linux kernel modules, drivers, and user-space Linux software as needed.
  • Troubleshoot problems across embedded software, hardware, operating systems, and system interfaces.
  • Work closely with hardware and FPGA engineers to integrate software with board-level functionality.
  • Support lab testing using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other electronic test equipment.
  • Assist with manufacturing, validation, and system-level testing.
  • Work hands-on with servers, lab equipment, boards, racks, and related hardware when necessary.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools where they provide meaningful engineering leverage while maintaining ownership of code quality and correctness.
  • Contribute to technical planning and product development within a small, collaborative engineering team.
Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • 4+ years of embedded software engineering experience preferred.
  • Strong C and C++ programming experience in embedded environments.
  • Experience programming microcontrollers, microprocessors, soft processors, or similar embedded computing platforms.
  • Strong understanding of embedded systems and hardware/software interaction.
  • Hands-on experience with board bring-up, board-level debugging, or hardware integration.
  • Strong Linux experience.
  • Experience developing software that communicates with hardware devices and host systems.
  • Familiarity with Linux kernel modules, device drivers, or low-level Linux development is highly valuable.
  • Python and/or Bash scripting experience is preferred.
  • Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and similar electronics lab equipment.
  • Comfortable working hands-on in a lab environment, including installing, testing, and troubleshooting hardware and servers.
  • MicroBlaze experience is a strong plus.
  • FPGA, Verilog, or VHDL knowledge is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with PCIe-based hardware is a plus.
  • Signal processing, control systems, RF, or mixed-signal electronics experience is helpful but not required.
  • Strong communication, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate is someone who can say: "I write C/C++ that runs on processors or microcontrollers, I understand how my software interacts with the hardware, and I'm comfortable putting a board on the bench and debugging it."

This person does not need to be the engineer designing FPGA logic in Verilog or VHDL. They should, however, be comfortable collaborating with FPGA and hardware engineers and understanding how their embedded software interacts with those systems.
