Job summary

Wabtec is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to define and develop embedded software for electro-mechanical products. Collaborate across Automation, Manufacturing Operations, and Manufacturing Engineering to improve processes and enable high-quality manufacturing operations.

You will verify, test, and integrate firmware, supporting time-critical tasks and real-time communications. The role requires a BS (EE or Software) with 5+ years of embedded experience, strong C/C++ skills, and

Qualifications

• Requires BS in Electrical or Software Engineering (MS preferred)
• 5+ years in embedded software design/development
• Experience with C/C++ on microcontrollers (PIC/STMicro/NXP/Renesas/TI)
• Experience developing bare-metal firmware for time-critical systems
• Familiar with CAN, CAN-FD, Modbus, RS-485, USB, Ethernet, MQTT, BLE, Wi‑Fi
• Experience with SPI, I2C, UART, PWM, timers peripherals
• Experience with automated builds, unit testing, CI, and release management
• Experience with Git and collaborative workflows
• Experience with LabVIEW, Python or equivalent
• Experience with Matlab/Python/C#/.NET or equivalent
• Familiarity with Altium for schematic capture and PCB design
• Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
• Knowledge of secure bootloaders and OTA firmware updates desirable
• Familiarity with cybersecurity standards (IEC 62443/NIST) desirable
• Willingness to travel as needed

Responsibilities

Job Description

Who will you be working with?

You will be part of the Product Engineering team, working closely with Automation, Manufacturing Operations, and Manufacturing Engineering teams. This role collaborates across functions to improve processes, integrate new technologies, and support high-quality, efficient manufacturing operations.

How will you make a difference?

As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will define and develop embedded software in accordance with software design and test requirement specifications and conduct verification testing during development. You will play a key role in developing innovative, market-leading electro-mechanical products as part of a cross-functional project team.

What do we want to know about you?

• Do you have a BS in Electrical Engineering or a BS in Software Engineering? (MS preferred)
• Do you have 5+ years of experience designing/developing embedded software systems?
• Do you have experience developing embedded software using C/C++ for microcontrollers such as Microchip PIC, STM32, NXP, Renesas, TI, or similar platforms?
• Do you have experience developing bare-metal firmware for time critical processing systems such as A/D sampling, motor control and communications?
• Are you familiar with state machine architectures, interrupt service routines, and Microchip Ethernet stack?
• Are you familiar with industrial and embedded communication protocols including CAN, CAN-FD, Modbus, RS-485, USB, Ethernet, MQTT, BLE, and Wi‑Fi?
• Do you have experience with microcontroller digital/analog peripheral hardware interface (SPI, I2C, UART, Digital I/O, PWM, timers)?
• Do you have experience with automated builds, unit testing, continuous integration, and software release management?
• Do you have experience using a source control system, code reviews, branching strategies, and collaborative software development workflows? Experience using GIT is desirable.
• Do you have experience developing automated test and validation tools using LabVIEW, Python, or equivalent environments?
• Do you have experience with PC-based engineering tools and scripting environments such as Matlab, Python, C#, .NET, or equivalent?
• Are you proficient with schematic capture, component footprint modeling and PCB design tools? Experience with Altium Designer is very desirable.
• Do you have the ability to effectively communicate highly technical concepts to a non-technical audience?
• Understanding of secure bootloaders and over-the-air (OTA) firmware update mechanisms is desirable.
• Knowledge implementing secure boot, secure firmware updates, authentication, encryption, secure key storage, and cybersecurity best practices for connected embedded devices is desirable.
• Familiarity with IEC 62443, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, or similar cybersecurity standards is desirable.
• Familiarity with Locomotive electrical systems is desirable.
• Are you a strong problem solver who can communicate technical concepts clearly?
• Can you manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing deadlines?
• Are you highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently?
• Are you comfortable working in environments with ambiguity and complexity?
• Are you able to travel as needed for the role?

What will your typical day look like?

• Optimize firmware performance, memory utilization, and computational efficiency within resource-constrained embedded systems
• Code development for configuring/interfacing with real time clocks, Ethernet PHY chips, external memory, and specialty sensors
• Implement security and password access routines and Ethernet communication protocols
• Leverage AI-enabled engineering tools and technologies to enhance hardware design, firmware development, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and data analysis activities; evaluate emerging AI capabilities and implement best practices to improve engineering efficiency, product quality, and innovation while ensuring compliance with cybersecurity, safety, and regulatory requirements
• Manage equipment and capital projects within budget and timelines
• Collaborate with teams to resolve issues and enhance manufacturing performance
• Apply Lean principles and drive continuous improvement initiatives
• Ensure safety, quality, and compliance in all processes

The salary rate for this role is currently $91000-129800 The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location.
