Job summary

Brooksource in Hopkins, MN is seeking a Senior / Principal Embedded Software Engineer for a hybrid, contract-to-hire role. The team works on wireless design, IoT, and embedded platforms, delivering reliable software for OEM customers within tight timelines.

The ideal candidate has 8+ years in embedded C, experience with real-time systems, embedded Linux/Yocto, and strong debugging skills. The role involves leading projects and collaborating across internal and customer teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience; prior consulting/services preferred.
• Direct experience programming in C for real-time embedded systems or Linux/FreeRTOS-based systems.
• Hands-on experience with embedded software coding and debugging at the chip level.
• Strong knowledge of MCU peripherals: UART, I2C, SPI, ADC, PWM, Timers.
• Experience in an embedded Linux / Yocto build environment.
• Proficient with test and debug equipment: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, spectrum analyzers.
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with shifting priorities.

Responsibilities

Senior / Principal Embedded Software Engineer

Contract to hire

Overview

Our client’s Wireless Design Services team is looking for experienced embedded software engineers to support strategic OEM customer engagements. This team works across a wide range of microprocessors, microcontrollers, and wireless platforms, with deep expertise in low-power design, high-reliability systems, IoT, and embedded Linux/Android. Engineers in this role work directly with customers to design, build, and deliver reliable embedded products on tight timelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and debug embedded software/firmware to customer and internal specifications
• Lead and/or mentor other engineers on technical delivery (preferred, not required)
• Coordinate across internal development teams and customer teams on complex, multi-team projects
• Provide hands‑on technical leadership on complex projects, adapting as project scope evolves
• Maintain clear documentation and tracking of project progress and source code
• Evaluate and improve software design processes and tooling

Required Skills & Experience

Desired / Nice‑to‑Have Skills

• Yocto build system experience (beyond required baseline)
• RF communication experience — protocols at the PHY/MAC/NWK layers such as 802.15.4, ZigBee, Bluetooth, Cellular, or Wi‑Fi
• Experience with routers and gateways
• Operating Systems: Embedded Linux/Yocto, Embedded Android, FreeRTOS
• Languages: C/C++, Python/MicroPython, C#

Representative Project Work

• BSP customizations and board bring‑up for custom CC8x boards based on Digi CC8x SBC
• Driver customizations/integrations for Android‑based medical devices (MIPI LCD, touchscreen, SPI, I2C, GPIO, DAI audio)
• Customization of Digi routers and gateways for specific end‑user requirements
• IoT devices using MCU and/or XBee modules for remote monitoring (wind farms, solar arrays, smart agriculture, smart locks/switches) over cellular connections
