Job summary

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking an Embedded Real-Time Software Engineer to develop hard real-time embedded software for DoD systems. You will design, implement, test, and maintain software on constrained hardware, interfacing with real-time OS, device drivers, and board devices.

Responsibilities include shaping software scheduling, health monitoring, and system state management, with emphasis on safety, security, and CI/CD practices.

Qualifications

  • Experience developing software for complex military systems using disciplined process.
  • Software engineering experience with developing in languages such as C/C++ and/or Ada.
  • Experience developing hard real-time software.
  • Active Secret Clearance (preferred).
  • Experience integrating trustworthy Machine Learning into design (offline or inline).
  • Experience developing software for integrated electronic warfare and/or sensors systems.
  • Experience with avionics data buses (MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, Ethernet, RS-422, etc.), tactical data links, military radios.
  • Experience developing avionic systems on military aircraft.
  • Experience with military relevant open software standards and frameworks.
  • Experience leading small to mid-sized technical teams.

  • Apply expertise in embedded systems to define requirements and develop embedded software designs.

  • Compile report input from other researchers and prepare final report deliverables.
  • Lead and/or contribute to white papers and proposals.
  • Provide technical leadership to development teams and verify managed developers follow embedded processes.
  • Design, architect, and provide senior level support of high-security, sensitive, or classified systems.
  • Serve as SME for software engineering tools and technologies.
  • Manage overall codebase, review code pull-requests, handle merging, branch management, and provide feedback to ensure sponsor requirements and code quality.
  • Other related duties, as assigned.

Project/Unit Description

The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) Systems Integration Division (SID) supports systems integration, system design, and product development projects for the Department of Defense (DoD) systems. SID researches military systems specializing in avionics, electronic warfare, autonomous systems, intelligence systems, tactical communication/datalink systems; and live, virtual, constructive training solutions. The SID team\'s engineering roles include Systems Engineering, Algorithm Engineering, Datalink Engineering, and Embedded Software Engineering.

Job Purpose

The Embedded Real-Time Software Engineer is responsible for developing hard real-time embedded systems software. The engineer designs, implements, and tests solutions executing on limited-resource hardware, interfaces to real-time operating systems, device drivers, and board devices. The role involves allocating hardware board devices, managing hardware device access, architecting software scheduling and low latency, controlling system states and modes, managing system components status and health, and developing domain-specific applications. The engineer performs full software development lifecycle tasks, applies disciplined software development processes, utilizes safety and security unique processes and designs, and incorporates open system software frameworks. Proficiency includes programming languages for real-time computing applications such as C and C++, and knowledge in software development principles, operating systems, CI/CD, DevOps, API development, container development, and distributed systems. The engineer works as part of a broad team of researchers to innovate new concepts, identify technology stakeholders, and execute challenging research in the national interest.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply expertise in embedded systems to define requirements and develop embedded software designs recognizing limitations of target hardware platforms.
  • Author technical reports and presentations for projects of moderate-to-high complexity.
  • Compile report input from other researchers and prepare final report deliverables.
  • Lead and/or contribute to white papers and proposals.
  • Provide technical leadership to development teams and verify managed developers are following embedded development processes.
  • Design, architect, and provide senior level support of high-security, sensitive, or classified systems.
  • Serve as a resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for software engineering tools and technologies.
  • Manage overall codebase, review code pull-requests, handle merging, perform code branch management, and provide feedback to team members to ensure sponsor requirements and code quality thresholds are being met.
  • Other related duties, as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Develop software for military embedded systems applications.
  • Develop software requirements and design.
  • Develop software using approved coding standards and processes.
  • Provide software development estimates.
  • Ensure software is developed to meet military, safety, and security standards.
  • Create and deliver technical presentations.
  • Act as the software technical focal to sponsors for assigned projects.
  • Mentor less experienced software engineers.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience developing software for complex military systems using disciplined process.
  • Software engineering experience with developing in languages such as C/C++ and/or Ada.
  • Experience developing hard real-time software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Experience integrating trustworthy Machine Learning into design, whether offline or inline.
  • Experience developing software for integrated electronic warfare and/or sensors systems.
  • Experience with development of secure and/or safety critical systems.
