We are seeking a Senior Embedded Linux / Yocto Engineer to join its Fire & Safety embedded software team. This is a hands-on individual contributor role supporting the migration of JCI’s IoT gateway product from Yocto 3.7 to Yocto 5.0 and ongoing gateway development and maintenance.
The gateway is a Linux-based embedded device that transfers data from fire alarm control panels to the cloud and central fire monitoring stations. The software stack uses Python and C applications communicating via MQTT.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or contribute to migration of the gateway BSP from Yocto 3.7 to Yocto 5.0, including kernel upgrades, layer updates, and recipe porting.
- Perform kernel and driver development, device tree modifications, and BSP stabilization.
- Build, configure, and validate embedded Linux images for the gateway hardware platform.
- Support application porting and compilation against the new Yocto 5.0 toolchain.
- Maintain and update existing Yocto layers, recipes, and build configurations.
Gateway Application Development & Maintenance
- Develop, maintain, and debug gateway applications written in Python and C communicating via MQTT.
- Support application integration with the Yocto 5.0 BSP.
- Validate end-to-end gateway functionality.
- Contribute to resolving development backlog items, identified vulnerabilities, and bugs.
- Work in a hybrid environment.
- Participate in agile ceremonies, sprint planning, and technical reviews.
- Document technical decisions, migration progress, and known issues.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of embedded Linux development experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with Linux kernel, U-Boot, BSP, and driver development.
- Strong Yocto Project / OpenEmbedded expertise, including recipe authoring, layer creation, custom BSP development, and multi-version migration.
- Proficiency in Python and C for embedded application development and debugging.
- Experience with device tree authoring and debugging for ARM-based platforms.
- Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills, including supplier firmware and third-party component issues.
- Ability to work independently and adapt to changing priorities in a small, fast-moving team.
