Job summary

Elementary Teacher (SY 2026-2027)

Pay Grade: Teacher Scale

Period of Employment: 10 Months | FLSA Status: Exempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Elementary School Principal

Location: Colonial Beach Elementary School

General Responsibilities

Under direction of the school principal, plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervises students in a variety of school related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community. Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

Essential Responsibilities
  • On a regular and consistent basis, meet and instruct assigned classes in the designated locations and times.
  • Create a classroom environment that fosters student involvement and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
  • Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students.
  • Prepare for classes assigned, and provide written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and communicate these objectives to students.
  • Plan for and utilize instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques that motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.
  • Take all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, CBPS policy and administrative regulation.
  • Assist the administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct and develop reasonable classroom rules, maintaining order fairly and justly.
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day, when required or reasonably requested.
  • Establish respectful relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers.
  • Appraise own effectiveness and demonstrate increased professional competence.
  • Participate in school management and share responsibility for the total school program.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor and Director of Special Education.
Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of school curriculum, framework, policies, and effective instructional practices.
  • Thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process.
  • Understanding of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and mandates governing special education services.
  • Knowledge of principles and methodology of effective instruction and behavioral supports for students with disabilities.
  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
  • Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum.
  • Respect for confidential information and the individual's right to privacy.
  • Effective communication with students, colleagues, administration, parents, central office, and community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
  • Model professional, moral, and ethical standards with personal integrity.
  • Self‑motivation, high energy, attention to detail, high work standards, problem‑solving, organization, critical thinking, stress tolerance, flexibility, and adaptability.
Education and Certification

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree.

Certification/Licenses: Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Department of Education teaching license with Elementary and Special Education endorsements.

Physical Requirements

Must have the use of sensory skills to communicate and interact. Physical capability to use and operate office equipment such as a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, repetitive motions. Some heavy work requiring 50 lb force occasionally may be required.
