Job summary

Accomack County Public Schools is seeking an Elementary Teacher for Accomac, Virginia. The role requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree in education (or related field) and teaching licensure to service grade levels in the state.

Job Description

Job Title: Elementary Teacher

Contract Length: 191 contract days

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Summary

The position is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops competencies in the assigned grade level and an understanding of its structure; motivates each pupil to apply the grade level's knowledge, experience, and skills; and prepares each student to meet the Virginia SOL standards.

Essential Duties

  • Prepares course objectives and outline for the course level, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the state and school.
  • Lectures, demonstrates, and uses audiovisual teaching aids to present subject matter to the class.
  • Prepares, administers, and corrects tests and records results.
  • Teaches rules of conduct.
  • Maintains order in the classroom and on the playground.
  • Counsels pupils when adjustment and academic problems arise.
  • Disciplining pupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents.
  • Keeps attendance and grade records as required by the school.
  • Coordinates class field trips.
  • Works with the total staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for the care of materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assumes responsibility for a neat, orderly environment for students committed to their care.
  • Practices and promotes positive interactions among students.
  • Encourages self-direction and self-motivation in students.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the subject being taught.
  • Exhibits evidence of effective lesson plans.
  • Utilizes a variety of appropriate materials and resources.

  • Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or a related field.
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with a Bachelor's or Master's degree to teach in the assigned area.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in regular classrooms, outdoors, and on thephonee; physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
