Job summary

Diocese of Harrisburg seeks an Elementary School Substitute Teacher for St. Rose of Lima in Thomasville, PA. The role is as-needed, full-time or part-time, to cover teacher absences and maintain a Catholic-based learning environment.

The candidate will deliver instruction, enforce classroom rules, assess student progress, and support church-related activities and Mass preparation as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher (preferably in education or a related field).
  • PA teaching certification is preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and work with diverse students.

Responsibilities

  • Fill in for teacher absences and teach elementary students basic academic, social, and formative skills in line with Catholic values.
  • Establish and enforce behavior rules and maintain classroom order.
  • Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, and development.
  • Follow the teacher's instructions or lesson plans and adapt as needed.
  • Deliver instruction using various methods to meet diverse needs and interests.
  • Lead activities to promote learning, questioning, and exploration.
  • Communicate clear objectives for lessons and assess progress with tests and assignments.
  • Prepare students for future grades and support academic advancement.
  • Assist with related duties such as libraries, hall and cafeteria monitoring, and bus loading/unloading.
  • Support Mass preparation and sacramental activities for relevant students.

Elementary School Substitute Teacher

Basic Job Description

Fill in for teacher absences and teach pupils at the elementary level basic academic, social, and other formative skills in keeping with the school's Catholic character and Gospel values.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  • Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Follow the teacher's instructions or lesson plan.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • Conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Assign classwork and homework.
  • Read books to entire classes or small groups.
  • Administer tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress.
  • Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic problems, or special academic interests.
  • Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
  • Prepare reports on students and activities as required by the administration.
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage.
  • Lead activities designed to promote physical, mental, and social development, such as games, arts and crafts, music, and storytelling.
  • Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence for Act 48.
  • Supervise class projects, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
  • Administer standardized ability and achievement tests.
  • Perform administrative duties such as assisting in school libraries, hall and cafeteria monitoring, and bus loading and unloading.
  • Provide disabled students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms.
  • Prepare and supervise students for Mass as well as other sacramental preparation.

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements
  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform all the technological requirements of classroom management.
  • Must be able to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels and in an outdoor environment.
  • Must be able to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in both a normal classroom environment and in an outdoor setting.
  • Must have the physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, And/or Abilities Required)
  • Must be 21 years old or older.
  • Must possess a Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in education or a related field.
  • A PA teaching certification is preferred, but not required.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Must comply with PA State clearance requirements.
  • Must be a Catholic in good standing if teaching religion. Otherwise, must be willing to respect the Catholic Church and follow our basic morality guidelines.
