Position: Elementary School Counselor - 195 Day

Location: Dumfries, VA - School: Williams ES

Job Summary

This position supports the academic success of all students by planning, designing, and implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that is preventative in design and developmental in nature, aligned with national, state and local standards, and supported by the American School Counseling Association's (ASCA) National Model. The counselor functions as a leader, advocate, collaborator, and agent of systemic change to promote the maximum development of academic, career, and personal/social goals.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Work within the school's approved beliefs, philosophy, and mission statements.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver a comprehensive counseling program based on student needs and in collaboration with building level administrators.
  • Develop written plans for service delivery based on state and local standards, data, and individual student needs.
  • Advocate for elimination of barriers to access and assure rigorous education for all students.
  • Maintain current communication and appropriate resources for stakeholders.
  • Apply legal and ethical standards of the school counselor role.
  • Deliver counseling services through classroom instruction, interdisciplinary curriculum, group activities, individual or small group appraisal and advisement, consultation, individual and small group counseling, crisis counseling/response, and peer facilitation.
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other specialists to develop academic, career, and personal/social skills.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and use relevant data to guide student achievement.
  • Develop an effective referral and follow-up process with in-house support and outside agencies.
  • Provide leadership, intervention, and support during crisis counseling.
  • Manage the counseling program through calendars, action plans, and management agreements.
  • Devote at least 60% of time to direct student services, with remaining time for program management, system support, and accountability.
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers and administrators to ensure effective implementation and reflection of school goals.
  • Implement data-driven action plans that align with school goals, address closing-gap issues, and monitor student progress.
  • Utilize data to conduct yearly program audits and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Collect and use data to inform program needs and direction.
  • Provide regular result reports to administrators, teachers and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor academic achievement, discipline referrals, attendance and support appropriate interventions.
  • Complete other duties as assigned aligning with ASCA recommendations.
Qualifications

Education

  • Master's Degree in School Counseling from an approved program.

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year, preferably 3-5 years of counseling experience in elementary school settings.
  • Minimum of 100 hours of practicum in one setting (PreK-6 or 7-12) and 100 hours internship in a different setting.
  • For counselors with no prior experience, internship should have been completed at the elementary school level.

Certification

  • Meets Virginia requirements for school counselor certification with an endorsement.
Work Environment

The role is performed in a standard indoor office or classroom environment with occasional noise and exposure to computer screens. Responsibilities include regular on-site presence.
