Job summary

Memphis School of Excellence CENTRAL OFFICE in Memphis, TN seeks an Elementary ELA Instructional Coach to work with teachers during regular school hours. The position reports to the Director of Academics and is full-time.

The coach will lead professional development, model effective instructional strategies, analyze assessment data, design curriculum-aligned activities, and support teachers to improve student outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with endorsement in the taught grade/subject and a valid Tennessee certificate.
  • Must be highly qualified as defined by state standards.
  • Knowledge of district policies and health/safety guidelines.

JOB GOAL: The Instructional Coach will work as a colleague with classroom teachers to support student learning. The Instructional Coach will focus on individual and group professional development that will expand and refine the understanding about researched-based effective instruction.

Duties of the Instructional Coach include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support the philosophy and vision of the school.
  • Facilitate the intellectual and professional development of teachers.
  • Create positive relationships with teachers and administrators.
  • Communicate and demonstrate researched-based instructional practices that result in increased student performance.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Support the value of an education.
  • Demonstrate willingness to assume leadership positions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of researched-based instructional strategies that engage all students.
  • Provide organized, individual and/or group learning opportunities for teachers as needed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge using a variety of assessment tools.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of curriculum and subject matter.
  • Provide support in analyzing student assessment data.
  • Assist teachers with designing instructional decisions based on assessment data.
  • Assist teachers with specific classroom activities when requested.
  • Provide support for classroom motivation and management strategies.
  • Assist teachers in creating materials that are in alignment with the curriculum.
  • Monitor intervention programs by observing and meeting with teachers.
  • Provide teachers Internet links related to instruction and curriculum.
  • Instruct and support teachers with curriculum software products, and classroom/curriculum-related technologies.
  • Provide assistance in researching instructional and/or curriculum issues.
  • Model lessons when appropriate.
  • Provide encouragement and emotional support to teachers.
  • Encourage ongoing professional growth for all teachers.
  • Manage time and schedule flexibility that maximizes teacher schedules and learning.
  • Work positively toward meeting identified district and building improvement goals.
  • Assist with the development of district curriculum, instruction, and assessments.
  • Develop and maintain a confidential, collegial relationship with teachers.
  • Possess an understanding of when to contact administrators regarding issues of safety/ethics involving students in classroom observed.
  • Obtain advance approval of the Principal/Academic Coordinator for unique activities and expenditures.
  • Attend workshops/conferences to learn about new innovative instructional strategies.
  • Adhere to all district and building health and safety policies.
  • Understand that job responsibilities may vary related to each building’s needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree and endorsement in the grade/subject taught with a valid Tennessee certificate.
  • Must be highly qualified.
  • Governed by the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Code Annotated and the Tennessee Board of Education.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, effective supervision, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data, and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems, philosophies, laws, regulations, and procedures; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria and the goals and priorities of planning and development programs.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Light Work: may require occasional light lifting.
  • Nights and weekend activities will be occasionally required.
  • Position is in the office setting and may involve prolonged work at a desk in one location.
  • Moderate travel is required.
