Position Summary
The First-Grade Teacher is responsible for creating a faith-filled, nurturing, and academically rigorous classroom environment that supports the spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of young learners. The teacher integrates Catholic teachings and Classical Education principles throughout daily instruction while fostering a love of learning, wonder, virtue, and discipleship. The First-Grade Teacher serves as a visible witness of the Catholic faith and works collaboratively with school administration, faculty, parents, and parish community members to support the mission of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School.
Catholic Identity and Faith Formation
- Support and implement the philosophy and mission of Catholic Classical Education.
- Model Christian values and actively witness the Catholic faith in word and action.
- Integrate Catholic teachings, prayer, Scripture, virtues, and sacramental life into daily classroom activities.
- Participate in school Masses, liturgical celebrations, retreats, prayer services, and faith formation opportunities.
- Work toward and maintain Catechist Certification as required by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and TCCB ED.
- Foster a classroom culture that promotes holiness, servant leadership, and Christian discipleship.
Instruction and Curriculum
- Teach all assigned first-grade subjects, including Religion, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and other designated curriculum areas.
- Develop lesson plans that align curriculum, instruction, and assessment while meeting TCCB ED and Archdiocesan standards.
- Utilize instructional strategies that support the Classical Education model and development of foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
- Incorporate the principles of Classical pedagogy into classroom instruction.
- Differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles and student needs.
- Integrate technology appropriately to enhance student learning.
- Maintain accurate lesson plans, grade records, assessment data, and student documentation.
- Continually assess student progress and communicate academic growth to parents and administration.
Classroom Environment and Student Development
- Establish and maintain a structured, organized, and engaging learning environment.
- Promote positive character development through virtue formation and consistent expectations.
- Manage student behavior in accordance with school policies and Gospel values.
- Foster student curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and a love of learning.
- Provide a safe, welcoming, and nurturing classroom atmosphere.
- Support the spiritual, emotional, social, and academic development of every child.
Communication and Collaboration
- Maintain effective communication with parents regarding student progress, behavior, and classroom activities.
- Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, support staff, and parish personnel.
- Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional learning communities, committee work, and school improvement initiatives.
- Support school enrollment, marketing, community-building, and fundraising activities as requested.
- Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
Professional Responsibilities
- Follow all Archdiocesan, TCCB ED, and school policies and procedures.
- Attend required professional development and complete annual professional growth requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and school matters.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, flexibility, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Participate in school events and activities outside of regular school hours as needed.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the Principal.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
- Valid Texas teaching certification or ability to meet TCCB ED teacher qualification requirements.
- Practicing Catholic in good standing who actively supports the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church.
- Ability to pass all Archdiocesan background screening and Safe Environment requirements.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Commitment to Catholic Classical Education.
Preferred
- Early Childhood through Grade 6 certification.
- Previous elementary teaching experience.
- Experience within a Catholic school environment.
- Knowledge of Classical Education philosophy and instructional practices.
- Catechist Certification or willingness to obtain certification.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the school day.
- Ability to supervise students in classroom, playground, cafeteria, church, and other school settings.
