Job summary

Job description

Position Summary

The Elementary Teacher Aide supports the classroom teacher in providing a Christ-centered, safe, nurturing, and academically engaging learning environment for elementary students. This individual assists with instruction, classroom organization, student supervision, and daily classroom activities while reinforcing biblical values, respectful behavior, and age-appropriate independence.

The Elementary Teacher Aide works under the direction of the classroom teacher and school administration to support the academic, spiritual, social, emotional, and physical development of each student.

Essential Responsibilities
Instructional Support
  • Assist the classroom teacher with implementing lessons, activities, and learning centers.
  • Work with individual students and small groups to reinforce skills and concepts introduced by the classroom teacher.
  • Provide students with appropriate guidance and encouragement while helping them complete assignments.
  • Assist with reading, writing, mathematics, Bible, and other instructional activities as directed.
  • Support students with varying academic abilities and learning needs.
  • Help administer classroom assignments, assessments, and other learning activities under the teacher’s direction.
  • Prepare instructional materials, copies, displays, manipulatives, and classroom resources.
  • Assist with educational technology and classroom equipment as needed.
  • Encourage students to develop responsibility, confidence, perseverance, and age-appropriate independence.
  • Observe student progress and communicate relevant information to the classroom teacher.
Classroom Support and Organization
  • Help maintain an orderly, welcoming, and engaging classroom environment.
  • Prepare the classroom and instructional materials before lessons and activities.
  • Organize and maintain classroom supplies, books, learning materials, and equipment.
  • Assist with classroom displays, bulletin boards, student work, and seasonal projects.
  • Help distribute and collect assignments, materials, and student belongings.
  • Perform routine clerical tasks related to classroom instruction as assigned.
  • Support classroom procedures, schedules, and transitions throughout the school day.
  • Assist with classroom setup and cleanup before and after activities.
Student Supervision and Safety
  • Supervise students in the classroom and other assigned areas, including hallways, restrooms, playgrounds, cafeterias, arrival and dismissal areas, and field trips.
  • Maintain active awareness of student locations, activities, and safety.
  • Reinforce classroom and school rules consistently and respectfully.
  • Help students resolve minor conflicts using biblical principles, respectful communication, and appropriate problem-solving skills.
  • Report injuries, illnesses, behavioral concerns, suspected bullying, or safety issues promptly to the classroom teacher or school administration.
  • Follow all school procedures related to student health, safety, emergencies, and incident reporting.
  • Assist students with basic personal needs when appropriate and authorized by school policy.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students at all times.
  • Never leave students unsupervised unless specifically directed by authorized school personnel.
Behavior and Student Development
  • Model and reinforce respectful, responsible, and Christ-like behavior.
  • Support the classroom teacher’s behavior-management plan and disciplinary procedures.
  • Provide consistent, calm, and age-appropriate redirection.
  • Encourage kindness, cooperation, honesty, self-control, responsibility, and respect for authority.
  • Help students develop positive relationships with classmates and adults.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to students’ academic, social, emotional, and physical needs.
  • Communicate student behavioral or developmental concerns to the classroom teacher.
  • Follow teacher and administrative guidance when supporting students with individualized learning or behavior plans.
Communication and Collaboration
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers, administrators, support staff, and families.
  • Follow the classroom teacher’s directions and seek clarification when expectations are unclear.
  • Communicate student needs, progress, behavior, injuries, and concerns promptly to the classroom teacher.
  • Direct parent questions regarding student progress, grades, discipline, or classroom policies to the classroom teacher or appropriate administrator.
  • Maintain professional, gracious, and Christ-honoring communication with students, parents, colleagues, and visitors.
  • Participate in faculty or staff meetings, training, and professional development as required.
  • Receive feedback with a teachable spirit and apply guidance to improve job performance.
  • Maintain flexibility when schedules, assignments, or student needs change.
Confidentiality and Professional Conduct
  • Protect the confidentiality of student, family, personnel, and school information.
  • Discuss student information only with authorized school personnel who have a legitimate educational need to know.
  • Follow all school policies, procedures, and expectations for faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrate punctuality, dependability, professionalism, and appropriate dress.
  • Use school technology, equipment, and resources responsibly.
  • Refrain from discussing confidential classroom or student matters in public areas or on social media.
  • Report suspected abuse, neglect, or other student-welfare concerns according to school policy and applicable law.
  • Perform assigned responsibilities with integrity, humility, discretion, and a servant’s heart.
Spiritual Leadership
  • Model a personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ and support the mission, vision, and values of the school.
  • Demonstrate Christ-like character in interactions with students, families, colleagues, and visitors.
  • Support the integration of biblical truth throughout classroom instruction and daily activities.
  • Encourage students to grow in kindness, obedience, honesty, gratitude, responsibility, compassion, and respect.
  • Assist with Bible lessons, prayer, chapel, Scripture memory, and other spiritual-development activities as directed.
  • Guide student behavior and conflict resolution in a manner consistent with biblical principles and school expectations.
  • Pray for and encourage students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Participate in the spiritual life of the school as expected of faculty and staff.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Assist with school programs, special events, field trips, testing, and other activities as assigned.
  • Provide classroom coverage or support in other elementary classrooms when requested.
  • Assist with arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, and other supervisory duties.
  • Help maintain clean, safe, and organized instructional spaces.
  • Follow emergency, security, and crisis-response procedures.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the classroom teacher, principal, Head of School, or designee.
Qualifications
  • A personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Agreement with and commitment to the school’s statement of faith, mission, vision, and values.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree, college coursework in education or child development, or relevant certification preferred.
  • Previous experience working with elementary-age children in a school, church, childcare, or similar setting preferred.
  • Understanding of child development and age-appropriate expectations for elementary students.
  • Ability to follow instructional plans and directions provided by the classroom teacher.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work patiently and effectively with students who have varying academic, behavioral, and developmental needs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and receive direction and feedback.
  • Current CPR, AED, and first-aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification within the timeframe established by the school.
  • Completion of all required background checks, training, and school employment requirements.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, and move throughout the classroom and school for extended periods.
  • Ability to work at tables, desks, and floor level with elementary students.
  • Ability to supervise students indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, arrange, and store classroom materials or equipment, with reasonable accommodation as needed.
  • Ability to respond promptly and appropriately to student injuries, safety concerns, and emergency situations.
  • Ability to assist younger students with routine tasks when appropriate and authorized by school policy.
Reports To: Elementary Principal, Classroom Teacher, or Designee
