Job summary

YM & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood is seeking Group Leaders to support academic tutoring and assist lead instructors in preparing students to demonstrate new skills in STEM, leadership, sports, and the arts.

Part-time role with hours from 1:30 pm to 6 pm, Monday through Friday (15-20 hours/week) and flexible options. Emphasis on safety, professionalism, and collaboration with the Program Director and staff.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma required.
  • Experience with elementary students (K-5) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic support, homework guidance, assistance, and supervision to students.
  • Organize, lead, and promote students’ interest and participation in activities.
  • Supervise groups while maintaining safety and well-being.
  • Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning; serve as a role model.
  • Coordinate with Program Director and coworkers on program changes.
  • Participate in staff meetings, evaluations, and professional development.

ABOUT THE SCHOOLS:

P.S. 173 Elementary serves recent arrivals from Spanish-speaking countries. The program is focused on leadership, STEM and academics with students in the sixth to eighth grade. Students engage in beat building, sports, theater, LitMentors, art and cooking.

P.S. 187 Hudson Cliffs services grades K-8th Grade. Established in 1929, P.S. 187 "Strives to nurture diverse learners who challenge themselves academically, think critically, and actively participate in their community".

P.S. 178 The Professor Juan Bosch School is an unzoned K-5 public school in Upper Manhattan serving a close-knit and diverse community of learners. The school offers Dual Language instruction and inclusive programming, including an ASD Nest Program, and is grounded in the values of nurture, community, and academic rigor.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Group Leaders are responsible for academic tutoring and assisting lead instructors in preparing students to demonstrate newly acquired skills in STEM, leadership, sports and the arts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide academic support, homework guidance, assistance, and supervision to students.
  • Organize, lead, and promote the students’ interest and participation in the activities offered by you or the program.
  • Supervise groups of students while maintaining their physical and emotional safety and health.
  • Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning, and serve as a role model to students.
  • Always conducting yourself professionally and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order among the students.
  • Maintain effective classroom management that encourages full participation and student growth.
  • Closely coordinate with the Program Director and coworkers for any programmatic changes or any other issues or concerns.
  • Participate in staff meetings, program evaluations, program improvement, and professional development training throughout the school year.
COMPENSATION:
  • Work paid at $18 an hour.
  • Employees who are approved and assigned to teach classes will receive the Teaching Artist hourly rate of $21 an hour for the hours they are actively teaching. All non-instructional hours will be compensated at the employee's regular position rate of $18 an hour.
POSITION TYPE / EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
  • Part-time position.
  • Available Monday-Friday from 1:30 pm - 6 pm (15-20 hours per week) with room for flexibility.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Genuine interest in working with culturally diverse Kindergarten- 5th Grade students, and able to promote positive character development.
  • Strong academic skills and knowledge of New York state standards and test preparation.
  • A sincere desire to effect positive social and academic change in the lives of NYC youth.
  • Well-organized, reliable, and punctual.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Can work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Comfortable to learn and model universal Jewish values while working in and with a large, diverse population.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma.
  • Experience in running activities with Elementary (K- 5th) grade students with different learning abilities.
  • Has some experience in writing lesson plans and leading 45-60 minute educational activities for youth.
  • Must be able to attend student engagement trips and assist hosting student events in school and for other YM & YWHA programs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s, Associate, or degree in progress.
  • Experience using a positive youth development model
  • CPR certified.
  • Teaching Artist - Background in teaching or leading an activity.
WORK AUTHORIZATION & CLEARANCE:
  • Documentation of U.S. citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass the background check, medical exams, fingerprinting and other requirements of the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Education (DOE), and Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).
