Qualifications

• Uploads and downloads programming data to/from signal controllers using a laptop or handheld device.
• Diagnoses and repairs data communication equipment for traffic signal controllers in a coordinated system.
• Reads electrical blueprints/schematics; assists in layout of electrical and mechanical systems.
• Maintains lighting, power distribution, and climate control equipment across facilities.
• Maintains and repairs electrical devices and systems on fixed bridges and roadway/navigation lighting.
• Prepares daily work reports and assists telecoms with two-way radio installations.

Job description

This position is located in District 04, Unit 752 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Electronic Technician Supervisor. The overall function of this position is to install, repair, program, and maintain electronic traffic signal systems, solid-state computerized controllers, and video detection equipment. This position may assist in providing a wide variety of routine electrical maintenance and installation work at all facilities maintained by District 04 Operations. The incumbent is required to operate bucket trucks, forklifts and passenger vehicles as well as being required to have specialized knowledge in the use of voltmeters, amp gauges, PDA devices, computers and any other tools that are required for the job at hand. This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain licensing in the following areas: CDL.

Requirements

• One year of experience or training in the maintenance or repair of mechanical or electronic office equipment, precision machinery, or electronic/electrical systems.
• One year of experience or training in the installation, repair or maintenance of computer equipment or systems (hardware and/or software).
• Possession of a CompTIA A+ Certification.

Experience Substitution

Every six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in electronics or computer science will substitute for one year of the required experience.

Necessary Special Requirement

Must possess an appropriate Federal Communications Commission (FCC) radio-telephone license when working with marine and aviation transmitting equipment or with radar.

Job Duties

• Installs, repairs, and maintains electronic traffic signal systems, solid-state computerized controllers, and vehicle detection equipment. Performs detailed preventive maintenance and inspection of all computerized traffic signal systems in the district on a yearly basis.
• Inspects the installation of new traffic signals and flashing beacons, including wiring and cables, computerized signal controllers, and electronic signal heads. Performs the uploading and downloading of programming data to and from computerized traffic signal controllers using a laptop or handheld computer.
• Performs programming changes on computerized traffic signal controllers. Performs diagnosis and repair of data communication equipment for computerized traffic signal controllers in a coordinated traffic signal system.
• Install, repair, and maintain electrical systems and equipment. This includes primary and secondary high-voltage systems, underground and above-ground, indoor and outdoor lighting, cooling, heating, and refrigeration equipment, emergency power plants, control panels, generators, and power distribution systems.
• Read and interpret electrical blueprints, electronic schematics, and mechanical layouts for diagnosis and repair of all electrical equipment. Provide assistance concerning the layout of electrical and mechanical systems in all buildings. Perform preventive maintenance inspections on air conditioners, water heaters, ice machines, and other equipment required by the Office of Risk Management.
• Perform diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of electrical devices and systems associated with fixed bridges. Maintain and repair roadway lighting and marine navigational lighting on fixed bridges. Perform electrical maintenance work on the electronic signals and lights.
• Assist in keeping an adequate supply of electrical and electronic parts on hand for routine and emergency repairs. Assist in estimating repair costs to determine the feasibility of repairing or replacing electrical and mechanical equipment. Prepare Daily Work Reports (DWR) for all electrical maintenance work and traffic signal work. Assist telecommunications personnel with the installation of two‑way radios in state vehicles.
