Job summary

City of Dallas seeks an Electronic Technician Assistant to assist with installation, operation, and maintenance of electronic equipment for communications, traffic signals, and water systems. You will support senior technicians in diagnosing faults and performing tests to ensure reliable operation.

The role requires basic electronics knowledge, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a valid Class C license. Expect to work shifts including nights, weekends, and emergencies as needed.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist senior Technicians in evaluating performance and reliability of electronic equipment.
• Troubleshoot and replace defective electronic equipment including communication and traffic signal components.
• Test components and circuits; diagnose malfunctions and assist in maintenance across water pumps and related systems.
• Drive City vehicles to sites and load tools/materials for repairs.
• Document maintenance and repair activities; participate in training to upgrade skills.
• Replace electronic components in motors and pumps; perform calibration and emergency support as needed.
• Perform other trades work as needed.

Under direct supervision, learns and assists with the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of electronic, communications, computer, traffic signal control or related electrical equipment to ensure functional operation and compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC) adopted by TDLR.

Job Description Overview

The Electronic Technician Assistant performs entry level technical work involving installation, operation, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of electronic equipment for communications, traffic signal control, flood control, pumping stations or related electrical equipment to ensure efficient operation for the City of Dallas.

Essential Functions

• Assists and supports more senior Technicians in evaluating performance and reliability of electronic equipment by applying electronic theory, principles of electronic circuitry, testing procedures, and related knowledge to install, build, test, troubleshoot, repair and modify equipment.
• Troubleshoots and assists in the replacement of defective electronic equipment such as communication equipment, traffic signal lights and signs, sound or lighting equipment, and telecommunication equipment or related components to eliminate malfunctions.
• Tests electronic components, circuits, and faulty equipment and applies knowledge of functional operation of electronic units and systems to diagnose cause of malfunction; performs various tests and implements various testing methods to evaluate soundness of all pumps, motors, and related equipment; performs alignment activities, general maintenance, and assists in the provision of technical work to correct deficiencies or issues.
• Drives and operates City of Dallas vehicles and other equipment to facilitate repairs, maintenance, and inspection services; loads tools and materials onto vehicle to ensure necessary materials are available to install or repair equipment.
• Documents inventory, maintenance and repair activities, and provides accurate records of work performed and supplies needed; participates in and attends various training opportunities to develop skills and expertise.
• Replaces electronic components in motors and water pumps at pumping stations; performs calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting on equipment for water control, stormwater, water quality, and chemical handling; works on an emergency basis and supports more senior technicians to minimize risk and resolve issues.
• Performs other trades work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

• Basic knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations controlling operations and checking off base station and mobile two-way radio equipment.
• Understanding of the operation and function of a variety of traffic signal controllers, meters, and other related equipment.
• Knowledge of sound and lighting equipment operations.
• Knowledge of electronic theory and practice involved in the installation, testing, diagnosis, and repair of complex electronic circuitry.
• Ability to develop knowledge to identify and differentiate among color coded electronic components.
• Ability to develop knowledge to use a variety of standard electronic and electrical testing instruments and tools.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple wiring diagrams and schematic drawings related to electronic equipment.
• Ability to communicate and engage effectively with various personnel, operations, and maintenance groups to ensure all electronics concerns are handled.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience in electronics installation, testing, diagnosis, and/or repair of any electronic equipment or electrical hardware.

EQUIVALENCIES: A Vocational Diploma or current Certificate from TDLR may fulfill the education requirement. An associate degree or higher in an electrical or electronic technology field will meet the education and experience requirements. A two (2) year certificate from an accredited organization, including high school dual credit programs, ISA, trade schools, community colleges, Military Occupation Specialty (MOS), in an electrical or electronic technology field will meet the education and experience requirements.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Must have a valid Class C driver's license.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 18 years old. Must be able to assist with the installation of electrical work under the supervision of a master or journeyman electrician, as needed. Subject to varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays and/or twenty-four/seven (24/7) emergency call out. Subject to inclement weather conditions.

Salary Range $21.67 - $23.60 The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
