The Electromyographic (EMG) Technician performs specialized neurodiagnostic testing procedures, including electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS), to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders. The EMG Technician prepares patients for testing, operates and maintains diagnostic equipment, collects and documents test data, and collaborates with providers to ensure accurate and timely diagnostic results. This position functions under the direction of a Physiatrist and/or supervising physician and is responsible for maintaining a safe, efficient, and patient-centered testing environment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for EMG and NCS procedures by explaining testing processes and addressing patient questions or concerns.
• Verify patient identity and obtain appropriate clinical history prior to testing.
• Perform nerve conduction studies according to established protocols and physician orders.
• Apply electrodes and other testing equipment accurately to obtain high-quality diagnostic recordings.
• Monitor patient condition during procedures and ensure patient safety and comfort.
• Calibrate, troubleshoot, clean, and maintain EMG and neurodiagnostic equipment to ensure accurate operation.
• Collect, document, and maintain accurate patient records, testing data, and procedure results within the electronic medical record.
• Prepare preliminary technical reports and communicate findings to the supervising physician for interpretation.
• Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
• Adhere to infection prevention, safety, and quality standards.
• Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and continuing education activities.

Qualifications

Education

• Associate degree in Neurodiagnostic Technology, Allied Health, or related healthcare field preferred.
• Completion of an accredited Electromyography (EMG) Technician or Neurodiagnostic Technology program preferred.

Licenses/ certifications/ registrations

• Current certification as a Registered Nerve Conduction Study Technologist (R.NCS.T.), Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist (CNCT), Registered Electrodiagnostic Technologist (R.EDT), or equivalent certification preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within orientation period.

Experience

• Previous experience in a neurodiagnostic, neurology, physiatry, or clinical neurophysiology setting preferred.
• Experience performing electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) preferred.
• Experience with electronic medical records and diagnostic equipment software preferred.

• Knowledge of neuroanatomy, neuromuscular physiology, and electrodiagnostic testing principles.

The role requires the ability to lift to 50 pounds independently and involves frequent pushing, pulling, carrying, or repositioning of objects or patients weighing up to 25 pounds. There may also be occasional lifting or transferring of individuals weighing over 100 pounds, with the expectation that appropriate lifting techniques, mechanical aids, or team assistance will be used to ensure safety. Working Conditions:

This position is performed primarily in an indoor healthcare environment, such as a hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility. While the work setting is protected from outdoor weather conditions, it may be subject to variable indoor temperatures. The role involves frequent exposure to infectious and contagious diseases, hazardous materials, and medical equipment, with the expectation that all staff follow appropriate safety protocols and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

The health care environment can be fast-paced and unpredictable, requiring the ability to respond quickly to changing circumstances, including high-pressure or emergency situations. The work setting also involves multiple simultaneous demands and varying levels of noise due to medical equipment, staff activity, and patient needs.
