Job summary

MIKEL is seeking an Electromechanical Designer/Engineer in Middletown, RI to design and document electro-mechanical systems from concept to deployment, and to develop PCBs and wiring harnesses for Navy projects.

The role requires SolidWorks/OrCAD proficiency, 5+ years of relevant experience or 3+ with a bachelor’s degree, and the ability to obtain SECRET clearance. On-site work with occasional travel to NUWC Newport and Fall River locations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience with a technical certificate or 3+ years with a bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in design, drafting, electronics or related discipline is required
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM, OrCAD or similar PCB/cable harness design tools

Responsibilities

  • Design and document electro-mechanical systems from concept to deployment.
  • Assist in trade space evaluations of weight, size, cost, and evaluate COTS items for manufacturability.
  • Develop printed circuit board electronics, circuit diagrams, silk screen, board layout, wiring harnesses, and interfacing connectors.
  • Participate in team meetings to plan and execute complex technical tasks.
  • Coordinate with Navy and DoD engineering personnel across projects.
  • Source COTS items and coordinate with suppliers; replace aging legacy products.
  • Create 3D models and drawings using CAD tools (SolidWorks, OrCAD) and NAVSEA configuration management.
  • Assist in writing reports, procedures, service bulletins, test plans, and statements of work.
  • Build, troubleshoot, and test prototypes with technicians and operators.

Position:Electromechanical Designer/Engineer

Nature of Role:Supports the Design, Documentation and Product Development of systems and technologies key to MIKEL’s family of products and also works in partnership with the Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and document electro-mechanical systems, i.e. assemblies, subassemblies, and components from concept to deployment.
  • Assist engineers in performing trade space evaluations of weight, size, cost, and evaluates commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) items, and manufacturability of components in accordance with project specifications.
  • Assists engineers in the development of printed circuit board electronics, circuit diagrams, silk screen, board layout, wiring harnesses, interfacing connectors etc.
  • Participate in team meetings to plan and execute complex technical tasks.
  • Works closely with MIKEL personnel, US Government engineers, Navy service members, and others across the DoW enterprise.
  • Coordinates with commercial suppliers, acquisition and logistics team to source COTS items, develop new components, and or replace aging legacy products that are being phased out.
  • Develop 3D models and drawing details of mechanical and electrical components (PCBs) and assemblies using CAD software, i.e. SolidWorks, OrCAD, etc. and guides documents through NAVSEA configuration management processes.
  • Assists in the writing of reports, procedures, service bulletins, briefings, test plans, statements of work, and other documents.
  • Builds, troubleshoots, and tests prototypes and sub-assemblies with the assistance of technicians and operators.

Requirements:

  • Ability to Obtain/maintain SECRET Clearance.
  • Ability and willingness to take direction.
  • Clear and concise communicator.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM, circuit works, OrCAD or other PCB and cable harness design software.
  • Familiar with the process of developing, manufacturing, testing, and trouble shooting PCB electronics and integrating with complex system.
  • Clear understanding of packaged electronics systems & components from enclosures, sheet metal, mechanical assembly, PCB development, testing and validation for rugged applications.

Desired Experience & Skills:

  • Can-do positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills and technologies.
  • Familiarity with programming, robotics, or similar cross functional experience desired.
  • At least 3 years’ relevant professional experience in a regulated industry.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience with a Technical Certificate in design, drafting, electronics or other related discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years’ relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, i.e. mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering is preferred.
  • Other education or qualifications considered with experience relevant to this role.

Work Location:

  • Primary work locations include: NUWC Newport, RI, Middletown, RI, and Fall River, MA.
  • Candidates may be expected to work at different locations in support of various projects and at times may need to visit multiple sites on the same day.
  • Work schedule is generally Monday-Friday with core hours between 10 am and 2 pm with some flexibility permitted. Occasional Telecommuting allowed, but this is an on-site/in-person customer facing role.
