Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a versatile Electro‑Mechanical Technician to fabricate and integrate electrical and mechanical elements for optical test facilities and prototype equipment. You will troubleshoot, assist with mechanical design, and help with system integration and calibration within a collaborative team of engineers and scientists.

Qualifications

  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have 3+ years of machining and electrical fabrication experience, including soldering skills.
  • Have experience working with, and updating, mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Can demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, logical reasoning, and organizational skills.
  • Have a basic understanding of active and passive electronics.
  • Are willing to get certified to NASA electrical and mechanical fabrication standards.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and integrate electrical and mechanical elements for optical system test facilities and prototype equipment.
  • Troubleshoot operational and prototype electrical systems.
  • Assist with mechanical design and component fabrication (sheet metal and small‑scale machine work), equipment racking, cable and harness fabrication, system integration, system calibration and checkout.
  • Participate in the design, integration, and test of electro‑optical test and prototype systems.
  • Assist with lab management functions, including equipment maintenance, calibration and overall management of facility assets.
  • Travel to support field test activities; support will consist of integration and trouble‑shooting on site as well as assisting with data collection.

We are seeking a well‑rounded technician to help us provide innovative optical test capabilities that address the operational needs of our sponsors. You'll be joining a hardworking team of engineers and scientists who collaboratively solve hard problems in the area of optical systems, hardware‑in‑the‑loop systems, and novel electronics system development.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign‑on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑term disability, long‑term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance and training and development.
