Job summary

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts seeks an electrician to perform electrical work and diversified duties on complex electrical and electronic systems, alarm systems, and lighting systems.

Job description

This position is part of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (the Center). The incumbent will be responsible for performing the electrical work and other diversified duties on complex electrical and electronic systems, electrical equipment, alarm systems, and lighting systems.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook Federal Wage System Qualifications.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Physical Efforts and Working Conditions:

Considerable physical effort is expended to maneuver large equipment into and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling. Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weighs up to 75 pounds. Occasionally lifts objects weighing more than 75 pounds to set up work and equipment needed to complete tasks. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large motors, compressors, condensers, chillers, switchboards, and transformers. Necessary repairs and installations may be made from ladders, scaffolding, lifts and platforms where the parts of systems worked are frequently in hard-to-reach places requiring stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling for extended periods of time. Incumbent climbs ladders and must be able to climb stair towers greater than 100 feet. Accessing work sites often requires walking more than three miles throughout the day and stepping over objects. Incumbent works in confined areas such as attics, near ceilings, in utility corridors, etc. Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, platforms and under floors and crawlspaces and where the systems and equipment worked are hard-to-reach. Is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent works from various heights on ladders, lifts, and scaffolding. Duties are performed both inside and outside in weather conditions varying from hot, humid summer heat to below freezing winter temperatures.

Incumbent exposed to serious injury when working on energized circuits, adjacent to operating equipment, or from various heights. May be exposed to burns, cuts, bruises, smoke and fumes, flying particles when grinding or cutting, and may suffer discomfort when wearing hoods, goggles, and other personal protective equipment (PPE). Subject to electric shock and falls from ladders; injury from lifting and handling heavy materials and equipment; discomfort from noise, fumes; and vibrations of equipment. When working along the roadway conditions exist where there is a very high volume of traffic and traffic speeds exceed 55 MPH. This poses immediate danger and requires the employee to be constantly alert.
