You will work closely with operations to minimize downtime, perform preventive maintenance, document repairs, and ensure proper grounding, wiring, and safety

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of high‑voltage distribution, AC/DC motors and control systems.
  • Experience with DC drives and AC VFD systems.
  • MSHA Surface Certification preferred; MSHA Electrical card within two years.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair electrical issues on draglines, electric shovels, drills, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Maintain DC/AC drive systems and PLC/relay-based controls.
  • Inspect and maintain substations, transformers, switchgear, and breakers.
  • Perform high‑voltage switching procedures and energization/de-energization.
  • Document repairs and maintenance activities; report conditions to supervisors.
  • Ensure proper grounding, bonding, and grounding system integrity.
  • Use testing equipment to prevent failures (megger, infrared, etc.).
  • Perform emergency field repairs to restore production quickly and safely.

About the role: We are currently seeking an Electrician – Dragline/Drills to join our maintenance team at the North Antelope Rochelle Mine (NARM) in Wright, Wyoming. NARM is the world's largest surface coal mine. The mine produces high‑quality thermal coal shipped by rail. It holds approximately 465 million tons of coal reserves.

Job Summary

The Electrician – Dragline/Drills will maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems on large‑scale surface mining equipment, including draglines, electric shovels, drills, and support equipment. The role is critical to ensuring safe, reliable operation of high‑voltage systems in an open‑pit mining environment while maintaining strict compliance with MSHA regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair electrical issues on:
    • Draglines (walking systems, hoist/drag motors, control systems)
    • Electric shovels (crowd, hoist, swing systems)
    • Blast hole drills and auxiliary equipment
  • Maintain and troubleshoot:
    • DC and AC drive systems
    • Motor generator (MG) sets or solid‑state drive systems
    • PLC and relay‑based control systems
  • Perform inspections and maintenance on trailing cables, cable reels, and high‑voltage connections.
  • Work safely on and around high‑voltage systems (typically 4,160 V – 13.8 kV).
  • Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot substations, transformers, switchgear, and breakers.
  • Perform switching procedures and assist with energization/de‑energization.
  • Ensure proper grounding, bonding, and grounding system integrity.
  • Conduct scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance on motors, control cabinets, braking systems, and electrical rooms.
  • Identify wear, heat damage, and early failure indicators.
  • Utilize testing equipment (megger, infrared, etc.) to prevent failures.
  • Install and repair cable splices, terminations, and junction boxes; lighting systems, sensors, and communication lines.
  • Perform emergency field repairs to restore production quickly and safely.
  • Assist in rigging and positioning of cables and electrical components.
  • Document all repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities.
  • Report equipment conditions and recurring issues to supervisors.
  • Communicate clearly with operations to minimize downtime.
Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of high‑voltage distribution systems, AC/DC motors and control systems, PLC troubleshooting, and electrical schematics.
  • Experience with DC drives and/or AC VFD systems.
  • Experience with ground fault systems and protection relays.
  • Proficient with a multimeter, megger, amp clamp, and diagnostic tools.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 3–7 years of heavy industrial or mining electrical experience.
  • OEM‑specific training (e.g., dragline or shovel systems) – preferred.
  • MSHA Surface Certification (Part 46 or 48). If lacking an MSHA Electrical card, the employee will be required to obtain it within two years of employment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for up to 4 hours per shift.
  • Ability to sit for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb up and down stairs/steps, and climb on/off equipment and ladders.
  • Ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other PPE as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), have rapid reflex movements, and good hand‑to‑eye coordination.
  • Ability to lift/raise 10–50 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently during the shift.
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions (changing weather, dust, mud, varying noise levels, light/dark conditions, confined work area).
  • Ability to work various shifts – days, evenings, nights, rotating schedules, weekends, and holidays.
