Job description

Job Purpose and Summary

This is skilled work in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures at various locations for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). The employee performs skilled tasks in accordance with standard practices of the electrical and mechanical trades, with work assigned and reviewed by a supervisor through observation of installed, repaired, or maintained equipment and adherence to electrical codes.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair, and install electric motors, relays, conductors, pumps, heaters, fans, air conditioners, electric services, distribution centers, breaker panels, card control devices, emergency generators, switch gears, transformers, roadway lighting, tunnel lighting, general lighting, conduit, and associated wiring.

• Locate and correct power failures and short circuits.

• Estimate time and materials needed for projects.

• Inspect, isolate, troubleshoot, and repair electrical malfunctions using various test instruments.

• Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.

• Operate an aerial lift and work at heights.

• Operate and properly maintain systems, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.

• Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and prints.

• Must be available 24/7/365 for emergency response.

• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent certification.

• Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) or a valid driver’s license with a CDL learner’s permit and pass the Class B CDL road test within the probationary or trial period.

• No CDL or permit restrictions that prohibit manual transmission, intrastate driving at specific locations, or the use of air brakes.

• Must possess a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Physical Card).

• Completion of electrical technical training at an accredited technical school and three (3) years of experience with a commercial/residential balance as an electrician, or five (5) years of documented electrical experience with a commercial/residential balance.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Position requires frequent speaking, writing, and reading reports. It demands frequent travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Incumbents must read fine print and fine details without color deficiencies. Physical capability to stand, stoop, walk, lift, and carry heavy tools and equipment is required, often lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 150 pounds occasionally. Work may involve using hand or power tools, working overhead or in bending, squatting, kneeling, or prone positions, and may require long hours in emergency situations, adverse weather, or extended assignments. Exposure to moderately adverse conditions, extreme weather, uneven surfaces, confined spaces, and heights is common. Safety equipment or precautions must be followed in all field conditions.
