Job summary

Texas Materials, a CRH Company, is seeking a Construction Laborer to support paving and construction projects. The role involves varying duties, from shoveling and raking to operating power tools and assisting with traffic control.

Candidates should be able to read and follow instructions, work in a team, and pass standard safety and background checks as required by OSHA/MSHA policies. The position may require travel and irregular hours.

Qualifications

  • Lift, carry, and move materials and supplies.
  • Assist with placement, moving, and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.

Position Overview

The Construction Laborer position is responsible for performing various duties on construction and/or paving projects, typically operating in a flexible utility capacity and transitioning between tasks as needed.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
  • Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Follow company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations, reporting problems to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
  • Assist construction/paving crew with duties such as shoveling, raking, running wheelbarrows, and safely backing trucks into the paver.
  • Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and material handling.
  • Follow the Foreman's direction for daily tasks and expectations.
  • Operate small power tools such as jack hammers when required.
  • Digs, spreads, and levels construction materials.
  • Lifts, carries, and holds materials, tools, and supplies.
  • Assist with placement, moving, and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education & Experience
  • High‑school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous related experience in the construction field.
Work Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Required to wear PPE as directed by OSHA/MSHA. PPE may include face shield, safety shoes, and coveralls.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in construction and paving.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
Physical Requirements
  • Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Vision (with correction) includes close, distance, peripheral, depth, and focus adjustment.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Employee frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above the shoulders.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, outdoor weather, and risk of electrical shock or burn.
  • Noisy areas may be loud, typically moderate.
