Position Overview
The Construction Laborer position is responsible for performing various duties on construction and/or paving projects, typically operating in a flexible utility capacity and transitioning between tasks as needed.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment.
- Follow company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations, reporting problems to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
- Assist construction/paving crew with duties such as shoveling, raking, running wheelbarrows, and safely backing trucks into the paver.
- Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and material handling.
- Follow the Foreman's direction for daily tasks and expectations.
- Operate small power tools such as jack hammers when required.
- Digs, spreads, and levels construction materials.
- Lifts, carries, and holds materials, tools, and supplies.
- Assist with placement, moving, and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education & Experience
- High‑school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous related experience in the construction field.
Work Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must pass a pre‑employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties.
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Required to wear PPE as directed by OSHA/MSHA. PPE may include face shield, safety shoes, and coveralls.
- Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in construction and paving.
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
Physical Requirements
- Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
- Vision (with correction) includes close, distance, peripheral, depth, and focus adjustment.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
- Employee frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands.
- Occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above the shoulders.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
- Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, outdoor weather, and risk of electrical shock or burn.
- Noisy areas may be loud, typically moderate.
