Job summary

RPC Company in Garland, TX is seeking an experienced Electrical Test Engineer to conduct factory acceptance and quality assurance testing for low- and medium-voltage electrical distribution equipment. You will evaluate relay operation, perform insulation and timing tests, and ensure compliance with drawings and specifications.

The role requires strong troubleshooting skills, thorough documentation, and adherence to NEC, NFPA, and OSHA standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, or servicing low- and medium-voltage electrical power distribution equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical testing equipment such as relay test sets, insulation resistance testers, dielectric testers, digital multimeters, timing analyzers, and injection testing equipment.
  • Strong understanding of switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, and power distribution systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, construction drawings, one-line diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex electrical issues.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, regulations, and safety standards including NEC, NFPA, OSHA.
  • NETA certification or electrical trade training is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct factory acceptance and quality assurance testing on low- and medium-voltage electrical distribution equipment, including switchgear, circuit breakers, transfer switches, protective relays, and related control systems.
  • Perform a variety of electrical tests to verify equipment performance, functionality, and reliability.
  • Evaluate relay operation, protection settings, and control sequences to ensure proper system performance.
  • Complete insulation resistance, dielectric withstand, contact resistance, breaker timing, and trip verification testing.
  • Inspect and verify control wiring, communication networks, and auxiliary circuits for accuracy and compliance.
  • Review equipment against engineering drawings, specifications, wiring diagrams, and one-line diagrams to ensure design conformance.
  • Document test procedures, results, observations, and corrective actions with a high level of accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and control system issues, identify root causes, and collaborate with engineering and production teams to resolve deficiencies.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts aimed at increasing product quality, testing efficiency, and operational effectiveness.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following all electrical safety practices, lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements, and applicable industry standards.
  • Assist with the development, refinement, and implementation of testing methods, work instructions, and quality processes.
  • Support additional technical and operational activities as needed.

  • Strong organizational and documentation skills with a focus on quality and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while managing priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, regulations, and safety standards, including NEC, NFPA, OSHA, and industry best practices.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, testing, commissioning, field service, industrial, utility, or mission-critical environment preferred.
  • NETA certification or electrical trade training is a plus.
