Job summary

MasTec, Inc. is seeking a field technician to perform maintenance and construction around high voltage substations and transmission lines up to 345 kV. The role requires extensive travel across the United States with a strong safety-first mindset and focus on doing the job right the first time.

You will work around wind turbines, service underground systems, diagnose faults, and replace components while adhering to daily safety paperwork and project plans.

Qualifications

  • Education and Work Experience Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent; Minimum 2 years’ electrical industry experience in maintenance or with electrical degree/certificate and 1 year experience; Valid Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Safety practices incl. LOTO; read drawings/schematics; operate basic power tools; ability to work in demanding conditions; communicate with managers, clients and public; problem solving with concrete variables.

Responsibilities

  • Work in and around wind turbines.
  • Interact professionally with customers and coworkers daily.
  • Perform maintenance/construction on electrical collection systems up to 34.5 kV.
  • Attend safety meetings and complete daily safety paperwork.
  • Demonstrate safety as a top priority.
  • Manage daily/weekly material inventory.
  • Diagnose and fix issues that could cause electrical shutdowns.
  • Troubleshoot and test electrical components and systems.
  • Service underground transmission systems, substations, or fiber optic sensing systems.
  • Replace worn or malfunctioning components.

Job description

Overview

This position will be responsible for maintenance/construction activities around high voltage (up to 345 kV) substations and transmission lines. This will require an extensive amount of travel throughout the US. This person must have a "safety first" attitude with an understanding of doing the job right the first time.

Responsibilities
  • Working in and around wind turbines
  • Ability to professionally interact with customers and coworkers on a daily basis
  • Ability to perform maintenance/construction on electrical collection systems including underground cable faults, pad-mount transformers, switchgears, T-Bodies, Splices and Wind turbine wiring up to 34.5 kV
  • Attend safety meetings and complete safety paperwork on a daily basis
  • Demonstrate safety as a top priority
  • Complete an inventory of material on a daily/weekly basis
  • Diagnose and fix any problem that could cause the electrical system to be shut down unexpectedly or fail to operate properly
  • Troubleshoot and/or test electrical components and systems.
  • Service underground transmission systems, substations, or fiber optic sensing and control systems
  • Replace worn or malfunctioning components
Qualifications

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 (two) years’ experience working in the electrical industry, specifically for preventative maintenance or electrical degree/certificate and 1-year experience
  • Valid Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Take reasonable care of your own and others’ health and safety and of those who may be affected in the day-to-day delivery of this role by taking personal responsibility for working to the Wanzek's Zero Injury principles
  • Basic computer operation skills and familiarity with internet-based program navigation
  • Ability to read, interpret and understand basic drawings and schematics
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions with precise execution
  • Experience using basic power tools
  • Ability to demonstrate basic industrial safety practices / protocols including LOTO
  • Able to work in demanding physical and inclement weather conditions
  • Comfort working remotely as part of a team with limited supervisory interaction
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the public
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to operate manlift, forklift, and skid steer
  • Ability to independently perform line locates, splice cable, perform TTR testing and swap out pad mount transformers
  • Ability to perform rigging and signaling to crane operators
  • Ability to perform accurate material management
  • Ability to independently perform VLF and megger testing, infrared scanning, fault locating, bushing exchanges and battery replacements
  • Ability to create concise reports related to testing that the individual or their team has performed
  • Ability to implement LOTO and switching plans, provide well thought out project planning
  • Ability to interact with clients effectively
  • Communicates effectively with others
