Job summary

The City of Oakland is hiring two Electrical Supervisors in the Department of Transportation. You will oversee a team of Electricians who install and maintain traffic signals, streetlights, and essential public electrical systems.

Qualifications

• Five (5) years of electrician experience in maintenance and repair of electrical systems.
• Two years in a supervisory or lead role.
• Journeyman Electrician certification (state) or equivalent.
• Valid California driver's license or ability to travel to various locations as required.
• Desirable IMSA Traffic Signal certification or government/public sector experience.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate with staff and outside contractors to plan and complete electrical work.
• Schedule daily and swing-shift assignments, standby coverage, and after-hours response.
• Collaborate with other supervisors to coordinate work and meet department goals.
• Assign work orders and service requests, monitor progress, and document in Cityworks.

• Conduct employee performance reviews and address performance concerns.
• Order and track materials, tools, equipment, and supplies; monitor inventory.
• Train and mentor staff on procedures, safety, and equipment.

What you will typically be responsible for:

• Coordinating with staff and outside contractors to ensure electrical work is properly planned and completed.
• Scheduling daily and swing-shift assignments, standby coverage, and after-hours response to ensure adequate staffing.
• Collaborating with the other supervisors to coordinate work, address challenges, and achieve shared department goals.
• Assigning work orders and service requests, monitoring progress, and reviewing completed work in Cityworks to ensure requests are properly addressed and documented.
• Managing employee timecard entries, tracking expenditures, and monitoring the unit’s budget and resources.
• Conducting employee performance reviews, addressing performance concerns, and handling employee relations matters.
• Ordering and tracking materials, tools, equipment, and other supplies while monitoring inventory levels and assessing future needs.
• Training and mentoring employees on work procedures, equipment, safety practices, and other skills needed to perform their jobs effectively.

This recruitment will produce two eligible lists. The restricted list will be for full-time, permanent part-time, or part-time City and Port of Oakland employees who maintain employment for the duration of the recruitment and pass all stages of the recruitment process. The open list will be for all other applicants who pass all stages of the recruitment process.

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:

Five (5) years of experience as an electrician in the maintenance and repair of a variety of electrical systems and equipment, including two years in a supervisory or lead role.

License or Certificate / Other Requirements:

Certification as a Journeyman Electrician. (Note: Certification must demonstrate successful completion of an electrical apprenticeship program or recognition as a Journeyman Electrician by a state licensing authority.)

Successful incumbents in this position are expected to operate automotive vehicles in the performance of assigned duties. Due to the nature of the assignment and the hours worked, public transportation may not be a cost-effective or efficient method for traveling to the various locations required. Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Traffic Signal certification from the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA)
• Experience in the government or the public sector

The Recruitment Process:
