Job summary

Highland Electric Fleets is seeking an Electrical Reliability Engineer to own the field-side technical integrity of the depot electrical infrastructure, from utility service to chargers that energize our fleets. You will spend time on site and on the phone with technicians, inspecting depots, supporting commissioning, and verifying safety and serviceability before live operation.

You will collaborate across teams to identify failure points, drive reliability improvements, and train field staff

Qualifications

  • 5+ years in electrical, power, or infrastructure engineering with field time, EV charging, utilities, energy, or fleet depot experience preferred.
  • Experience training or supporting field technicians, in person or remotely, with hands-on troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of OSHA electrical safety, NFPA 70E, and arc flash in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field inspections and commissioning at depots, ensuring safe, build-to-design readiness and sign-off for owned sites.
  • Validate energy quality at depots, including voltage stability, power quality, phase balancing and grounding.
  • Assess as-built construction quality in the field—conductor routing, terminations, mounting, clearances, and accessibility.
  • Conduct single-point-of-failure analysis across the depot portfolio and drive remediation.
  • Collaborate with Construction Electrical Engineering and Procurement to embed reliability into future sites.
  • Provide remote and on-site technical support to field technicians and reliability managers.
  • Develop and deliver training for field technicians on upstream electrical infrastructure and safe practices.
  • Support interconnections between chargers, vehicles, and upstream assets, including BESS and V2G integrations.
  • Partner with Energy team to characterize efficiency of power-conversion equipment and compare to profiles.
  • Review sold projects for operational readiness before deployment.
  • Cross-train with Charger Reliability Engineering to build depth and redundancy.
  • Develop and maintain standards, checklists, and documentation for depots.

Summary:

As an Electrical Reliability Engineer, you will own the field-side technical integrity of the electrical infrastructure that powers Highland’s vehicle depots—from the utility service, switchgear, and transformers to the conductors, surge protection, and chargers that energize our fleets.

This is a field service engineering role. You will spend your time on site and on the phone with technicians: inspecting newly constructed and energized depots, supporting commissioning, verifying that what was built is safe and serviceable, and troubleshooting the upstream infrastructure when it does not perform.

Sitting within Operational Engineering, you will be the operational voice that carries field reality back upstream identifying points of failure across the portfolio, flagging installation and component decisions that create maintenance risk, and partnering with Construction Electrical Engineering, Energy, and Procurement so those decisions are engineered out of the next site.

You will train and support the field technicians who keep our depots running, and cross-train with Highland’s Charger Reliability Engineering function to build shared technical depth and coverage redundancy across the infrastructure and charging sides of our technology stack.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform field inspections and commissioning support at newly constructed and energized depots, verifying that installed infrastructure matches design intent and is safe, serviceable, and ready to operate. Develop a process to evaluate and sign off on existing operational sites that Highland acquires.
  • Validate and troubleshoot the energy quality at Highland’s vehicle depots, confirming voltage stability, power quality, phase balancing, and grounding meet the standards required for reliable charger and vehicle operation.
  • Assess as-built construction quality in the field—conductors, raceways, terminations, equipment mounting, clearances, and access—and confirm installations are built to specification and can actually be maintained once the site is live.
  • Conduct single-point-of-failure analysis across the depot portfolio, identifying where equipment placement, redundancy gaps, or installation practices put site uptime at risk, and prioritize remediation.
  • Work with Highland’s Construction Electrical Engineering and Procurement teams to build field feedback and reliability best practices into future sites, bringing serviceability, maintainability, and spare-parts considerations into component selection.
  • Provide remote and on-site technical support to field technicians and reliability managers working on upstream electrical infrastructure, serving as the escalation point for complex infrastructure issues.
  • Develop and deliver training for Highland’s field technicians on upstream electrical infrastructure—system architecture, safe work practices, troubleshooting methodology, and equipment-specific procedures.
  • Support the operational readiness and ongoing performance of interconnections between chargers, vehicles, and upstream assets—including battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar canopies, and other energy integrations—including those supporting Highland’s vehicle-to-grid (V2G) aspirations.
  • Partner with Highland’s Energy team to characterize the real-world efficiency of power-conversion equipment, validate losses against deployed charge-management profiles.
  • Review sold projects for operational readiness—equipment access, serviceability, spare-parts strategy, and long-term maintainability—before deployment begins.
  • Cross-train with Highland’s Charger Reliability Engineering function to build shared technical depth and coverage redundancy across infrastructure and charging systems.
  • Develop and maintain operational infrastructure standards, inspection and commissioning checklists, and documentation that drive consistency, safety, and continuous improvement across depots.
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years in electrical, power, or infrastructure engineering with substantial field time—EV charging, utilities, energy, or fleet depot environments preferred; prior field service engineering experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience training, mentoring, or directly supporting field technicians, both in person and remotely, with genuine comfort troubleshooting alongside technicians over the phone.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA electrical safety requirements, NFPA 70E, and arc flash principles, with the ability to apply and teach them in the field
  • Strong working knowledge of medium- and low-voltage distribution (switchgear, transformers, conductors, grounding, protection) and EV charging systems (AC/DC fast), including how equipment selection and installation quality drive long-term reliability and serviceability.
  • Exposure to metering, surge protection, temporary generation, and DERs (BESS, solar, V2G); proven ability to diagnose systemic failures across a portfolio and drive cross-functional resolution; EE degree preferred, PE not required.

$125,000 - $140,000 a year
