Job summary

Alstom in Sanford, Florida is seeking an experienced Locomotive Electrician to diagnose faults, perform preventative maintenance, and troubleshoot high and low voltage systems aboard locomotives and trains. You will follow local, state, and national electrical codes and work with PLCs, wiring, and diagnostic equipment as part of a safety‑critical rail operations team.

This role requires 4+ years as an industrial electrician, the ability to read blueprints and schematics, and strong problem

Qualifications

  • 4+ years experience as an electrician in an industrial environment.
  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret circuit schematics.
  • Proficiency with Windows software and MS Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, analyze, fault detect and repair locomotive electrical and control systems.
  • Modify installations from drawings or electrical systems on locomotives as assigned.
  • Use diagnostics and microprocessor tools to fault-detect and diagnose.
  • Install and maintain wiring and equipment including PLCs.
  • Comply with railroad safety rules and FRA regulations.
  • Operate locomotives and related equipment as part of a team.

In your role as a Locomotive Electrician, you will:

Diagnose faults and solve common electrical problems on Hight and low Voltage. Perform preventative maintenance inspectiontasks to prevent system breakdowns and maximize electrical usability , you must be able to understand safety procedures involved with installation and must be comfortable using hand tools. You will need toFollow local, state, and national electric codes. You will also troubleshoot electrical issues and problems that may arise.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for troubleshooting, analysis, fault detection and repair of locomotive electrical and train control systems, sub-systems and components.
  • Perform modifications from drawings, prints or electrical systems on locomotives as assigned.
  • Perform fault detection and diagnostics through the use of microprocessor and diagnostic equipment.
  • Install and maintain electrical wiring and equipment such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), electrical equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Operate locomotive, passenger coaches and prime mover as part of team to move rail equipment.
  • Additional duties as assigned in accordance with union agreement and incidental work rule provisions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License
  • 4 or more years of experience working as an electrician in an industrial environment
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints
  • Experience in interpreting circuit schematics

Preferred Qualifications

  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications--both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of electrical theory
  • Must be able to obtain Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) designation and qualification
  • Need to meet regulatory medical qualifications to qualify for Maintenance Facility Engineer and Maintenance Facility Conductor
  • Driving record needs to be absent any moving convictions for alcohol or substance abuse within the previous 36 months
  • Must have basic proficiency with Windows software and Microsoft Office Suite applications (i.e., Outlook)

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on a regular basis
  • Push/pull/grip/carry on a regular basis
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity
  • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis

  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots and safety glasses
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examination
  • Subject to random testing for drugs and/or alcohol per certifications
  • Must pass all required assessments
  • Required to pass a post-offer medical examination, including drug and alcohol testing.
  • This position will be governed by a collective bargaining agreement, membership is required
  • Active employees must complete one year in current position or craft before applying for positions
