Job description

Job Summary

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Integration Engineer to join our GA-ASI division in San Diego, CA (Poway), supporting all GA-ASI product lines. Under general supervision with limited review, this position supports the Electrical Integration Group (EIG) with cable harness design and manufacturing by serving as a liaison between engineering and manufacturing. The role evaluates and resolves engineering-related production problems involving manufacturing, design, quality, and materials. The role also supports supplier manufacturing issues and process oversight as required. Tasks involve the exercise of independent judgment and discretion on matters of significance. The engineer documents findings and implemented solutions and communicates results to engineering and production stakeholders.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Identify issues in engineering and manufacturing and drive resolution using appropriate resources and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Review engineering specifications, drawings, and processes; confer across functional areas (MFGE, IHD Design, Quality, Supply Chain, Production) to provide and obtain technical information.
  • Perform Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews for Initial Releases; complete checklists and collaborate between MFGE and IHD Design to ensure manufacturability and drawing completeness.
  • Support DFM efforts to ensure consistency, use of standard parts, practices, and processes, and to minimize custom tooling.
  • Provide integration support during aircraft production first builds of avionics and harnesses; verify installation requirements are properly communicated and depicted on engineering documentation.
  • Support sustainment of released products, including performing mechanical failure investigations and recommending design and process improvements.
  • Provide on-site Electrical Lab support
  • Provide on-site production liaison support to the cable shop: triage build and drawing issues, investigate root cause, and develop corrective actions.
  • Submit Change Requests (CRs) to address drawing and specification issues; coordinate with Design Teams to cut in new processes or requirements into production.
  • Use engineering tools (splice distance calculator, splice lookup tool, component tool, wire bundle calculator) to verify configurations and support investigations.
  • Support dual-source efforts by helping ensure consistent technical requirements, manufacturability, and build quality across multiple suppliers.
  • Develop splice wire filler configurations, including creating CAD files, performing fit checks, and updating internal tools and documentation.
  • Support mechanical and environmental testing/qualification of cable and harness assemblies, including test planning, coordination, fabrication of samples, and documentation of results.
  • May participate in the development of new tooling using 3D printing techniques for proof of concept or in support of mechanical or electrical test efforts.
  • Document analyses, test results, and implemented solutions; present findings and recommendations to engineering, manufacturing, and management.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement in all activities.
  • Perform additional functions and other duties as assigned or required.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.

Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and two or more years of engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Mechanical Engineering degree preferred
  • Basic understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory, with the ability to apply them to cable/harness design, integration, and production.
  • Ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately in an evolving environment; capable of organizing work assignments to meet established schedules and milestones.
  • Experience with SAE-AS50881 and IPC-620 standards is desired.
  • Strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team; able to perform complex tasks in one engineering area and may provide direction to design or technician staff.
  • Ability to work extended hours as required to support production and integration schedules.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
