Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master of Science in Electrical Engineering required.
  • Minimum 4+ years of industrial instrumentation and engineering experience.
  • EIT registration strongly preferred; PE registration preferred upon eligibility.
  • Experience with instrumentation design, installation, and commissioning.
  • Knowledge of NEC and code compliance.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Strong communication and teamwork in multidisciplinary projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop instrumentation systems for industrial manufacturing facilities.
  • Produce installation details, diagrams, schedules, and layouts.
  • Specify field instrumentation and control elements.
  • Develop instrument specifications and support procurement activities.
  • Review P&IDs and process documents for instrumentation requirements.
  • Support PLC, DCS, and SCADA integration.
  • Coordinate with process, electrical, mechanical, structural, and PM teams.
  • Review vendor drawings and submittals.
  • Participate in site visits, commissioning, and startup support.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.

Job description

What You'll Be Doing

Hargrove is seeking an experienced Instrumentation Engineer III to support the design and execution of complex projects for industrial manufacturing clients. This role is ideal for an engineering professional with strong expertise in process instrumentation, industrial control systems, and field device applications who enjoys solving technical challenges and collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines.

As an Instrumentation Engineer III, you’ll play a key role in developing instrumentation solutions that improve safety, reliability, efficiency, and operational performance within industrial manufacturing environments. You’ll work closely with clients, project teams, and other engineering disciplines from project conception through startup and commissioning.

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
  • Design and develop instrumentation systems for industrial manufacturing facilities.
  • Produce installation details, motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts and grounding, lighting, power and instrumentation plans under general supervision.
  • Specify field instrumentation including flow, pressure, level, temperature, analytical, and specialty process instruments.
  • Develop instrument specifications and support equipment procurement activities.
  • Review P&IDs and process documentation to ensure instrumentation requirements are properly defined and implemented.
  • Support control system integration efforts involving PLC, DCS, and SCADA systems.
  • Evaluate and specify control valves, final control elements, and associated instrumentation packages.
  • Perform engineering calculations, technical evaluations, and design studies.
  • Coordinate with process, electrical, mechanical, structural, and project management teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Review vendor drawings, technical submittals, and multidisciplinary deliverables.
  • Participate in site visits, field investigations, commissioning, troubleshooting, and startup support activities.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.

Ideal Background
Education:

Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university is required.

Registration:

Engineer in Training (EIT) registration is strongly preferred. Professional Engineering registration is preferred upon eligibility.

Experience:

This position requires a minimum 4+ years of industrial instrumentation and engineering experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience supporting projects within industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with instrumentation design, specification, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Ability to perform lighting level calculations and voltage drop calculations.
  • Ability to size wire, conduit and overcurrent protection for both lighting and power applications.
  • Ability to route and calculate conduit fill and cable tray.
  • Strong understanding of instrumentation engineering principles and best practices.
  • Working knowledge of process control fundamentals.
  • Ability to develop instrumentation design packages for industrial manufacturing projects.
  • Knowledge and application of the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Ability to review and interpret vendor documentation and technical specifications.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
