Job Title: Electrical Inspector

The Building Safety division in the Economic, Development & Planning Department is seeking an Electrical Inspector to join their professional team. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in expanding their experience with the Michigan Residential Code, National Electrical Code, and related standards established by State law. The role involves practical application of electrical theory as it applies to wiring, along with the use of tools, equipment, and testing devices relevant to the electrical trade. The primary responsibility is to ensure that properties within the City of Lansing conform to pertinent electrical codes.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING:
  • Must meet minimum eligibility requirements per State Act #407 for registration as an Electrical Inspector and Plan Reviewer.
  • Apply for provisional registration within thirty (30) days of notification of employment.
  • Maintain registration throughout employment; failure to do so may result in disciplinary action.
IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Six (6) years of experience as a Journeyman electrician or equivalent training and experience
  • Valid Journeyman’s or Master's Electrician License
  • Valid driver’s license
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Review applications for electrical permits, ensuring compliance with codes and zoning ordinances for residential and commercial projects.
  • Issue permits and conduct field inspections of electrical work.
  • Perform electrical inspections on new constructions, remodels, repairs, and periodic inspections of commercial and industrial facilities.
  • Review and inspect fire alarm plans and systems.
  • Advise property owners on necessary corrections to meet municipal codes.
  • Conduct post-fire inspections to determine electrical causes of damage.
  • Check blueprints for proposed constructions and maintain operating records and reports.

The position offers a flexible work schedule with the possibility of a four-day workweek.
