Job summary

CEC is seeking a skilled Commercial Construction Estimator to support negotiated projects across core markets. This role collaborates with architects, engineers, owners, and subcontractors to prepare detailed cost estimates and bid packages.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years of estimator experience and a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, and Bluebeam. Willingness to travel and work variable hours is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience.
  • 3+ years of experience as a Commercial Construction Estimator, preferably within CEC's Core Market projects.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed conceptual cost estimates and studies from schematic/feasibility docs.
  • Update estimates as design evolves and prepare variance summaries.
  • Understand unit costs and cost drivers in construction.
  • Prepare bid packages with clear instructions to bidders and trade clarifications.
  • Negotiate subcontracts and lead cost/budget presentations to Customers/Owners.
  • Contribute to Value Engineering sessions with project and design teams.
  • Participate in RFP responses and project presentations.

Position Summary

This position works under minimal supervision and works primarily on negotiated commercial projects within the core markets. Works closely with architects, engineers, owners, and subcontractors.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Must have experience preparing detailed conceptual cost estimates and conceptual cost studies from schematic or feasibility level documentation.
  • Ability to prepare detailed estimate updates, as the design evolves, including preparing variance summaries between estimates.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of unit costs and the factors that affect construction cost.
  • Ability to prepare detailed instructions to bidders, trade specific clarifications and comprehensive bid packages.
  • Ability to understand and negotiate electrical and/or mechanical work.
  • Must have experience writing and negotiating subcontracts.
  • Must be prepared to participate and often lead the preparation and presentation of cost / budget information to the Customer / Owner.
  • Willingness and desire to actively participate in Value Engineering sessions with the project team and design team.
  • Must have experience being a member of the team involved in Request for Proposal Responses (RFPs) and the formal presentation for a project.
  • Can develop business with new and existing Customers.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Bachelors degree a plus or equivalent required related experience
  • 3+ years of experience as a Commercial Construction Estimator, preferably within CECs Core Market projects

  • Must meet attendance standards and comply with late/absence notification procedures.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing reaching, bending crawling, standing, or stretching.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds. Move about on the feet regularly. Sit for extended periods of time.
  • Requires the ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • May require travel.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Talk and hear, ability to communicate with others both written and orally and by telephone.
  • Possess good vision, normal or corrected. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Possesses good hearing, normal or corrected. Wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest), as needed.
  • Must be able to work 8 hours a day, 40 hours per week, and overtime as required and night shifts, as needed. Must be on-call to address delays, emergencies, bad weather, and other issues at the jobsite.
  • Must be able to work in the presence of customers and their representatives with little or no interference or disruption to the customer while maintaining a professional and courteous image.
