WSP USA’s Lakewood, CO office seeks a Full-Time Electrical Engineering Intern (Small Utility) for its Summer Internship Program. This 12-week opportunity starts May 17, 2027, with the start date flex depending on the student.

Interns will gain hands-on exposure to real projects alongside senior staff in power delivery and energy advisory domains. You will learn electrical engineering fundamentals, participate in substation design, transmission and distribution projects, and document project

• Actively enrolled in ABET-accredited electrical engineering or EE technology program with anticipated graduation Aug 2027 or later.
• Must be 18 or older and authorized to work in the United States.
• Interest in power systems and desire to advance skills related to WSP’s projects.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Ability to take direction from mentors and leaders to execute tasks.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office software, and tools.
• Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to policy.
• Authorization to work in the United States at internship start.

Job Description

Our Power and Energy is seeking a Full‑Time Electrical Engineering Intern (Small Utility) to work out of our Lakewood, CO office. This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program.

This internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program. As a summer intern, you have the opportunity to participate in our 12‑week program scheduled to start on May 17th, 2027. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.

Your Impact

• Support a variety of engineering tasks with the goal of developing technical, social, and ethical skills.
• Learn basic principles of Electrical Engineering.
• Work under the guidance of experienced engineers.
• Participate in substation design, including physical, electrical, relaying, and grounding aspects.
• Support transmission and distribution projects.
• Gain experience in system relaying and protection, including station and transmission relaying, and distribution coordination studies.
• Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
• Complete training on assigned tasks.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
• Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• Actively enrolled in an ABET‑accredited bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or electrical engineering technology, Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2027 or later.
• Must be 18 or older.
• Demonstrated interest in electrical engineering – power systems, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
• Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non‑engineering audience.
• Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to execute projects.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications

• Actively enrolled in an accredited electrical engineering, or related, Masters or PhD program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2027 or later.
• Successful completion of junior‑level power system courses covering topics such as three‑phase power, load flow and reactive compensation, protective relaying, symmetrical components, transmission line theory, power system transients, dynamic stability, and power system electromagnetics is a plus!
• Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills will be critical for the successful completion of tasks.
• Students who have passed or are scheduled to take the FE/EIT exam will be strongly considered for this position.
• Familiarity with design, drafting, or engineering software such as MATHCAD, SOLIDWORKS, AUTOCAD, etc. as well as Microsoft Excel is beneficial
• Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.

Compensation

Expected Pay (Colorado only): $23.90 - $31.11 per hour

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position within the state of Colorado, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
