Overview

Sierra Lobo, offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies. We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems. Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

This position is located at our Milan Ohio facility.

This internship is for Spring 2026 (early January through March/April)

Responsibilities

Apply creative analytical and practical Electrical Engineering knowledge (consistent with a pre-graduate level of skill) to tasks of varying complexity within the Aerospace and Defense Industry. Use a self-sufficient and hands-on approach to complete assigned tasks. Interface with technical and non-technical personnel within the organization. Seek and obtain experience in multiple aspects of the engineering profession.

Candidates must have a minimum availability of three (3) months.

Although the objective of this position is to develop the successful candidate for potential full-time employment with SLI upon completion of a degree, there can be no guarantee of an offer to return. Offers to return will be extended on a case-by-case basis based on individual performance and as business conditions permit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support Engineering and Technical Staff in the performance of their day-to-day tasks and projects. The nature of these tasks will vary widely.
  • Perform non-technical tasks on as-needed (but limited) basis to support incidental business needs. Examples may include clerical, administrative or similar work.
  • Use SLI AS9100 and ISO-9001 business processes as required in the performance of daily duties.
  • The student will be assigned to a supervisor who will provide a performance evaluation at the completion of the work session. This supervisor will be an experienced engineer and will be their primary point-of-contact on a daily basis, and will determine all task assignments.
NATURE OF POSITION CHALLENGES
  • There is not a specific set of tasks assigned to this position. The selected candidate may be requested to identify and pursue opportunities to contribute to overall company success.
  • There is a minimal amount of repetitive work associated with this position; candidates should be willing and able to face new challenges on a regular basis.
  • The student in this position will be required to adapt to changing business conditions. Task assignments may change on a frequent basis.
  • The student must be able to successfully function in both solo and team environments.
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and an understanding of behavioural expectations within a professional environment are expected outcomes of this work experience.
  • Unusual and extended hours may be occasionally required to meet deadlines.
SUPERVISOR GUIDANCE

Reports to an assigned supervisor, but for the most part works under the general guidance of multiple members of the Engineering Staff. Must be capable of working with minimal supervision at times. Must exhibit sufficient self-discipline to complete assigned tasks on-time. May be asked to identify or propose potential tasks particularly relevant to their career interests.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS

This position will have no supervisory responsibilities. Should expect to interact with engineering technicians on a frequent basis.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND INTEREST REQUIREMENTS

  • The successful applicant is required to be enrolled in an ABET-accredited university and pursuing a BS or higher degree in Electrical Engineering or a sufficiently-relevant Engineering discipline. Candidates must have completed a minimum of two (2) semesters of course work prior to the start of work. Candidates must have successfully completed a minimum of one semester prior to application to this position.
  • Existing schematic capture and PCB layout tool experience using Altium will be a strength in the candidate selection. Experience with OrCAD PSPICE Designer is also relevant
  • Basic hands‑on skills in an electronics lab environment are required. Use of voltmeters, ammeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, data acquisition systems and other common equipment should be expected.
  • A specific interest in the aerospace and defense industry is desireable but not mandatory.
  • Academic or other experience in software development using C/C++ and/or Python is a significant strength.
  • US Citizenship is required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING INTERN POSITION

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Visual and physical contact with system hardware and installed equipment. Multiple workstation assignments (office, test facility, control room, laboratory, shops, etc.).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is accomplished in offices, laboratories, shops, test facilities and in the field. Must be able to wear safety glasses.

MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT

Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age.

EQUIPMENT AND MACHINES INVOLVED IN WORK TASK

Office and facility equipment includes computers, electronic instruments, mechanical instruments, vacuum systems, solder/desolder equipment, laser equipment, miscellaneous precision measuring devices, etc. In all cases, appropriate operator training will be provided as needed to ensure personnel safety. All required PPE will be provided.

CRITICALITY OF ATTENDANCE

Standard working hours are 8am-5pm weekdays however mandatory (paid) overtime may be required on a limited basis to support periods of increased demand. The student is required to notify their supervisor in the event of any unscheduled absenses.
