Job summary

Power Device Corporation in Poway, CA is seeking an experienced hardware design engineer to lead high-reliability digital electronics development for aerospace, defense, and space applications. Onsite only, compensation ranges from $135,000 to $160,000 annually based on experience.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of hardware or digital design experience.
• Experience with DDR, PCIe, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, UART or similar interfaces.

Responsibilities

• Develop hardware architectures and detailed designs that meet performance, reliability, cost, and schedule objectives.
• Lead design decisions involving processors, FPGAs, memories, interfaces, and supporting circuitry.
• Perform detailed design analysis and identify technical risks early in the development cycle.
• Coordinate hardware development with FPGA, software, mechanical, systems, and manufacturing teams.
• Lead board bring-up, integration, verification, troubleshooting, and root-cause investigations.
• Develop project estimates, technical plans, and risk mitigation strategies.
• Support existing products through design changes, component obsolescence, defect resolution, and documentation updates.
• Lead or actively contribute to schematic, layout, and technical design reviews.
• Improve engineering methods, tools, design practices, and verification processes.

The compensation for this role is $135,000 - $160,000 annually based on experience.

This position requires a U.S Person or a person who can qualify for a Department of State or Department of Commerce License.

Essential Functions:

• Provide technical expertise in the design and development of complex digital electronic hardware.
• Lead schematic design, PCB development, board bring-up, integration, debugging, and verification activities.
• Design processor, FPGA, memory, high-speed interface, clocking, and power circuitry.
• Perform and review signal integrity, power integrity, timing, and design analyses.
• Define PCB layout requirements including stack-up, impedance control, placement, and high-speed routing constraints.
• Lead component selection and technical trade studies.
• Develop verification plans, test procedures, and qualification strategies.
• Lead resolution of complex board and system-level technical issues.
• Represent Engineering in technical reviews and customer discussions.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers.
• Support Manufacturing Engineering with production and sustaining issues.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Strong expertise in digital hardware and board-level design.
• Extensive experience with schematic capture and complex multilayer PCB development.
• Strong understanding of processor, FPGA, memory, clocking, reset, and power architectures.
• Strong understanding of high-speed digital design, transmission lines, impedance control, termination, crosstalk, and timing.
• Experience designing with interfaces such as DDR, PCIe, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, UART, or similar technologies.
• Experience with signal integrity and power integrity analysis.
• Strong component selection and design analysis skills.
• Experience with FPGA design, VHDL, Verilog, or FPGA integration is preferred.
• Strong hardware debugging skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and other laboratory equipment.
• Ability to independently solve complex technical problems.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and technical leadership skills.

Education / Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of relevant hardware or digital design experience.
