Job summary

HDR is seeking an Electrical Power Engineer with experience in utility-scale power generation and renewables to support design projects and lead engineering tasks. The role emphasizes mentoring engineers, client relations, and contributing to marketing efforts such as proposals and fee development.

Ideal candidates will have a background in power generation, protection and control, and experience with balance of plant designs, grounding systems, and relevant software tools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering with PE license (license recognized by local board).
• Experience in power generation design and balance of plant is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of protection and control design, and field startup/commissioning is desired.
• Experience with renewable energy projects (PV, BESS, DER/microgrid) is highly desired.
• Experience with engineering power consulting firms and client relationship development is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Support power generation design projects, leading multiple design/engineering tasks.
• Mentor and guide junior engineers and coordinate with Project Manager.
• Assist in marketing activities, including proposal writing, fee builds, and work breakdown structures.
• Coordinate with affected disciplines and manage RFI/CO processes to incorporate changes.

The Electrical Power Engineer candidate should have experience within the utility scale power and renewable energy industry and be capable of supporting power generation design projects including leading multiple design and engineering project or administration tasks simultaneously. The ideal candidate will have specific experience in power generation and distribution, renewable energy, protection and motor control design, power system studies, construction and equipment specification development, and balance of plant designs such as raceway, lighting, and grounding systems. Interest or experience in the exciting market of renewables and battery energy storage systems (BESS) is very desired. Additionally, interest in mentoring young engineers, client relationship development, and supporting marketing activities, such as proposal technical writing, fee builds, and development of work breakdown structure is desired. A level of design and engineer of record work experience with power plant systems is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Protection and control design experience including setting calculations and electronic files development
• Instrumentation and Controls experience particularly with DCS and PLC systems is a plus
• Field experience, including startup and commissioning, experience is desired
• Experience in renewable energy (PV, BESS, etc.) and DER or "microgrid" projects is highly desired
• Previous experience with an engineering power consulting firm desired
• Willingness to grow into a team lead or section manager role
• Knowledge and experience with three-phase electrical power, protection and control design, system grounding, physical design, and experience with other activities such as lighting and grounding design, including instrumentation and control and life safety systems
• Capable computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software (examples include ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, CYMCAD, PSCAD, etc.)
• Conduct work sessions and project meetings, and/or participate in reviews at the project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines, and provide construction contract administration as needed
• Develop project schematic design and contract document phase of a project including reviewing project documents, writing project specification and coordinating areas of conflict with other disciplines
• Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, requests for information (RFIs), change orders (COs), job safety analysis (JSAs) and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents
• Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Engineers, Project Coordinators or Designers

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering

Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.

• Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software. (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)
