Job description

About the Team

DoorDash Labs is an independent team within DoorDash. We are working on building autonomous delivery robots from the ground-up and other automation solutions as part of DoorDash's core delivery platform. If you have a passion for applying AI and robotics solutions in a service used by millions of people, then we want to talk to you!

About the Role

Drive the future of autonomous delivery! As a Motor Drive Power Electronics Engineer, you'll design efficient, compact, and reliable power systems, optimizing motor control and energy efficiency for real-world robotic applications.

You will report to the Lead of our Core Engineering team based in San Francisco. This role is in-office.

You're excited about this opportunity because you will…
  • Power Electronics Design & Development: Design, develop, and enhance power electronic systems such as inverters, DC-DC converters, motor drives, and high-power systems for various applications.
  • Motor Control Implementation: Develop, implement, and fine-tune control algorithms for AC and DC motors, including BLDC, PMSM, and induction motors.
  • System Modeling & Simulation: Conduct system-level modeling, simulation, and analysis using tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE, or equivalent software to validate designs.
  • Circuit Design: Create analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits for power converters and motor control systems with a focus on performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Prototyping & Validation: Build prototypes and perform testing to validate motor drives, controllers, and power systems in both lab and real-world environments.
  • Thermal Management Integration: Collaborate with mechanical engineers to design and implement effective thermal management strategies for high-power components.
  • EMI/EMC Standards Compliance e.g. CISPR25: Ensure that designs meet relevant electromagnetic compatibility, regulatory, and safety standards to prevent interference and ensure system robustness.
  • Failure Analysis & Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve issues in hardware design, production processes, and field applications, ensuring system reliability and performance.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with firmware, mechanical, and systems engineering teams to ensure efficient integration of power electronics into broader system designs.
We're excited about you because…
  • Experience in automotive, aerospace, or renewable energy applications.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in power electronics design, motor control, or related areas.
  • Strong understanding of motor control techniques such as field-oriented control (FOC) control.
  • Proficiency in circuit design and simulation tools (e.g., Altium, LTSpice, MATLAB/Simulink).
  • Experience with high-voltage, high-power design and protection strategies.
  • Knowledge of power semiconductors (IGBTs, MOSFETs, SiC, GaN) and gate drive circuits.
  • Hands-on experience in PCB design and layout with EMI/EMC considerations.
  • Knowledge of thermal management techniques for power devices.
