Electrical Engineer (PCB & Power Systems)

Job Type: Full-Time

Reports To: Senior Power Systems Engineer

Who Are We:

Sceye is a high-growth technology company, building the next generation of instant communications, imaging and remote sensing infrastructure through stratospheric platforms.

Our lighter-than-air high-altitude platform systems (LTA HAPS) are capable of maintaining position over an operational area in the stratosphere (altitudes of 18 – 21km). They can carry multiple telecommunications, imaging and remote sensing payloads, providing unique functionality, cost, environmental and societal advantages.

Our customers & partners include some of the largest global telecommunications companies, infrastructure operators, climate researchers, civil and defense agencies. At Sceye, we aim high, and we want you to join us at the stratospheric edge of innovation. As part of our mission-driven team, you’ll contribute to building breakthrough technologies that are changing the way we connect and observe the world. We are looking for individuals who bring not only deep expertise but also bold vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

About the Position:

We are seeking a proactive and hands-on Electrical Engineer to lead the design, architectural verification, and integration of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and power systems for our high-altitude platforms. This role requires deep expertise in PCB design software (Altium, Eagle) to architect layouts, calculate creepage/clearances, and validate designs to prevent high-voltage arcing and short circuits. While PCB design and engineering verification are your primary focus, you will also apply your hands-on skills to prototype, integrate, and test battery sub-assemblies and solar modules as part of our dynamic workflow.

What You’ll Do:

Primary Responsibilities (PCB Engineering Focus):

  • PCB Design & Architecture: Lead end-to-end PCB design using Altium and/or Eagle, from schematic capture and component selection to final board layout and routing.
  • Clearance & Thermal Analysis: Perform rigorous engineering calculations for creepage clearances, trace spacing, and thermal resistance to proactively mitigate potential quality issues such as arc potential in high-altitude environments.
  • Prototyping & Validation:Take PCB designs from concept to fully populated boards. Oversee the fabrication and component population process—whether through hands-on assembly or by coordinating with external PCBA vendors—and conduct testing to validate performance.
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM): Identify layout constraints early in the development cycle, collaborate with the broader engineering team, and implement design modifications to improve reliability and manufacturability.

Secondary Responsibilities (Power Systems Integration): (Hands-on support to be performed alongside PCB development)

  • Battery System Integration: Prototype, build, and test foundational battery components, including battery module configurations.
  • Power Routing & Soldering: Engineer and execute safe DC wiring routes, perform precision soldering, and integrate various electrical components.
  • Solar Testing & Assembly: Support the hardware assembly, system integration, and basic power testing of solar modules.
  • Hands-On Execution: Use standard hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic lab equipment to assemble hardware while maintaining strict safety and quality standards.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or a closely related field.
  • 3+ years of professional engineering experience in PCB design, power electronics, or hardware engineering.
  • Advanced proficiency in PCB design software such as Altium and Eagle (Required).
  • Proven experience taking a board from schematic to a physical, fully populated prototype (experience coordinating with external PCB fabrication and assembly houses is perfectly acceptable).
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage constraints, electrical clearances, and IPC manufacturing standards.
  • Hands-on capability and willingness to build what you design (soldering, wiring, prototyping).
  • Proficiency with engineering drawings and schematics

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with high-voltage DC systems, Battery Management Systems (BMS), or solar integrations.
  • A strong mechanical aptitude with a passion for hands-on DIY and hardware fabrication.
  • Experience in an aerospace, aviation, or fast-paced R&D environment.

What We Offer:

At Sceye, we’re building more than high-altitude platforms—we’re building a workplace where people (and their pups) thrive. Here’s what you’ll enjoy:

  • Chef-Prepared Lunches – Fresh, onsite meals to keep you fueled and focused.
  • Snacks & Refreshments – Enjoy a variety of snacks and drinks available throughout the day.
  • Wellness Perks – Access to a gym, pickleball court, and an outdoor dog kennel.
  • Dog-Friendly Environment – Bring your four-legged friends to work and enjoy a pet-welcoming space.
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage – Medical, dental, vision, and disability insurance, with over 82% of premiums covered—and 100% for everything else.
  • 401(k) with Match – Company contributions that are yours from day one.
  • High-Performance Culture – Join a collaborative, inclusive environment where your work helps shape the future of aerospace.
