D451 engineers provide engineering leadership for work activities on submarines, including the planning, execution, and certification of work.

This position is for the D451, non-propulsion electrical engineering group that works on the construction aspects of auxiliary systems on submarines for the US Navy.

D451 Engineering leads submarine construction work locally and at offsite locations including Quonset Point, Rhode Island and Newport News, Virginia, as well as Naval Submarine Base New London. Strong written and verbal communication skills are utilized and fostered. A hands-on, proactive, deadline-driven engineering approach is the norm. Awareness and understanding of military specifications, submarine shipbuilding specifications and design criteria, USN maintenance/overhaul requirements, and special emphasis programs are developed through mentoring and training.

Tasks required of the D451 waterfront electrical engineer include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Planning of submarine upgrade, troubleshooting, and repair work. This includes the development of troubleshooting courses of action and writing / peer reviewing technical work documents.
  • Interpretation and translation of shipbuilding specifications, technical manual procedures, and contractual requirements.
  • Deck-plate engagement and resolution of emergent issues. Ability to work in shipyard environment and onboard ships is required.
  • Development of technical rationale to support approval of nonconforming conditions.
