Job summary

Duke University is seeking an Electrical Engineer I to join our interdisciplinary team responsible for safe, reliable electrical systems across campus facilities and utility plants. You will collaborate with operations, engineering, and maintenance staff to support ongoing projects and ensure compliance with codes and safety practices.

Required is a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and at least three years in design, planning, maintenance, and evaluation of electrical systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in design, planning, maintenance, and evaluation of facility electrical systems.
  • Utility-plant experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and monitor maintenance and renovation of all University utility plant electrical systems.
  • Attend weekly plant coordination meetings and collaborate with cross‑disciplinary teams.
  • Develop utility shutdown request forms, including full lists of impacted equipment, and communicate impacts to operations teams.
  • Develop and supervise electrical switching procedures for construction or maintenance projects.
  • Troubleshoot electrical distribution systems and equipment within utility plants.
  • Prepare reports and analyses outlining progress, trends, and recommended improvements to plant electrical systems.
  • Conduct plant walk‑throughs to identify and address operational issues.
  • Update electrical training modules and train operations/maintenance staff.
  • Use the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to manage inventory and maintenance activities.
  • Maintain accurate one‑line diagrams and electrical panel schedules for utility plants.

Qualifications
Education/Training

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in an electrical engineering field. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of three years’ experience in design, planning, maintenance, and evaluation in facility electrical systems. Experience in a utility plant setting preferred OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $65,769.00 to USD $104,595.00.
