Job description

Electrical Engineer - Fuzing Development
Energetics Technology Center (ETC)
Location: 4445 Indian Head Highway, Indian Head, MD 20640

The Energetics Technology Center (ETC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and engineering organization founded in 2006 and headquartered in Indian Head, Maryland. ETC works with government, industry, and academia to develop, mature, test, and transition technologies that address critical defense needs. Its work spans energetic materials, warheads and fuzing, propulsion, modeling and simulation, data and digital engineering, test and evaluation, manufacturing modernization and automation, industrial-base support, and technology transition.

ETC is seeking a full-time Electrical Engineer to support a customer fuzing branch in the development of fuze electronics for new defense systems. The engineer will design and prototype electronic circuits and PCB assemblies, translate fuze functional and safety requirements into electrical designs, and support bench validation and design iteration. The work requires an understanding of the warhead and initiation requirements that the fuze must satisfy.

This is a hands-on electrical design role working alongside fuzing subject-matter experts. The engineer will focus on circuit architecture, schematic and PCB design, component selection, prototype fabrication, bring-up, troubleshooting, and technical documentation. Fuzing experts will lead most system integration activities and coordination with the warhead group; the Electrical Engineer will provide the electrical design information and test evidence they need.

This is a full-time onsite position based at ETC's Indian Head office and customer facilities. Work in laboratory and test environments will be required. Occasional travel and work outside normal business hours may be necessary to support integration and test events, and limited remote flexibility may be available based on program and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Translate fuze functional, electrical interface, initiation, and safety requirements into block diagrams, circuit architectures, and component-level design concepts.
  • Design analog, digital, power, and mixed-signal electronic circuits and PCB assemblies for fuze development prototypes.
  • Use Altium Designer or comparable ECAD tools to create schematics, PCB layouts, bills of materials, and fabrication and assembly packages.
  • Build, bring up, and troubleshoot prototype boards using appropriate laboratory equipment; verify circuit and board behavior against documented requirements.
  • Develop bench test plans, procedures, and fixtures for electrical characterization, functional verification, and design iteration of fuze electronics.
  • Analyze prototype test results, identify design or component issues, document root causes, and implement and verify design changes.l>
  • Define and document the electrical interfaces and interconnect needs of fuze electronic assemblies in coordination with fuzing subject-matter experts.
  • Maintain configuration-controlled design files, drawings, parts lists, build records, test data, and prototype documentation.
  • Participate in electrical design and safety reviews; work with fabrication and assembly suppliers to resolve manufacturability and prototype build issues.
  • Provide fuzing experts with electrical design analyses, interface documentation, and test results to support their system integration and qualification planning.
Required Education:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. A master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline is preferred.

Experience Level:

Minimum of 2 years of relevant electrical engineering experience designing, prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting electronic assemblies or embedded systems; 3–5 years or more is preferred. Experience with fuze electronics is a plus.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • U.S. citizenship and current possession of, or eligibility to obtain and maintain, a U.S. Secret security clearance. Higher-level clearance or program-specific access may be required for certain assignments.
  • Experience with circuit design, schematic capture, PCB layout, and production-level fabrication and assembly documentation using Altium Designer or comparable ECAD tools.
  • Working knowledge of analog, digital, power, and mixed-signal circuit design, component selection, and electronic system interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience with board bring-up, debug, and validation using oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, power supplies, or similar equipment.
  • Ability to develop electrical architectures, interface documents, bench test procedures, and clear technical reports for safety-critical electronic hardware.
  • Experience working within configuration management and change control processes.
  • Ability to work independently and with multidisciplinary engineering and test teams; strong technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
  • Experience designing or prototyping fuze electronics, initiation-related electronic subsystems, or comparable safety-critical hardware.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-1316 and related fuze safety requirements, including how warhead and initiation requirements affect electrical design.
  • Experience with embedded firmware bring-up, design for manufacturability and test, environmental characterization, or prototype fabrication.
What We Offer:

Hands-on electrical design and prototyping work supporting a fuzing branch, along with flexible work schedules, generous paid time off and holidays, employer-paid medical, dental, and vision options, tuition assistance, life and disability coverage, and a 401(k) plan with an immediate Safe Harbor employer match.

Compensation:

Compensation at ETC is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the combination of education, certifications, knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, internal and external equity, location, clearance level, as well as contract-specific affordability, and applicable employment laws. The estimated salary range for this positionis based on full time status.
