Job summary

HDR, Inc. is seeking an Electrical Engineer in California to join the Building Engineering Services group.

The role focuses on electrical design of facilities across multiple markets, coordinating with a multidisciplinary team throughout planning, design, and construction. You will develop construction drawings and specifications, review shop drawings, and perform engineering calculations while driving high-quality, technically sound designs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an Electrical emphasis.
  • Professional engineering license (PE) or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of electrical building design experience.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, SKM, AGI and Easy Power; strong MS Office skills.
  • Demonstrates collaboration and commitment to employee-owned culture.

Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design work on small to mid-sized institutional/industrial projects from schematic design to construction documents.
  • Review electrical documents for conflicts with other disciplines.
  • Write and edit electrical specifications and select equipment.
  • Assist with medium voltage and low voltage design upgrades and green field projects.
  • Prepare plans and specs per NFPA 70; include switchgear, pumps, lighting, HVAC, fire protection.
  • Produce drawings, conduit routing, and wiring diagrams; perform calculations.
  • Conduct site surveys and verify installations.
  • Perform power system studies and arc flash assessments.
  • Coordinate with disciplines and manage changes; QA/QC.
  • Provide construction contract administration as needed.
  • Attend meetings with agencies for code compliance.

HDR is looking for an Electrical Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services Business Group in the Walnut Creek, or Folsom, CA office. This individual will be responsible for the electrical design of facilities in support of a variety of markets including Technology, Corporate/Commercial, Education, Healthcare, Water/Wastewater, Municipal, Industrial, Power, and Federal. They will be expected to coordinate and work closely with a multidiscipline design team throughout the entire life cycle of projects from planning stages, through the development of construction documents, and construction administration. They will be responsible for the development of construction drawings, specifications, and supporting engineering calculations, as well as the review of shop drawings during construction. This individual should be self-motivated, collaborative and possess strong leadership skills with an initiative to deliver high quality, technically sound electrical engineering designs.

In the role of Electrical Engineer we'll count on you to:
  • Perform, plan, direct and monitor work of the electrical design team on small to mid-sized institutional/industrial projects through the schematic design development and contract document phase of a project.
  • Review electrical documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines.
  • Write/edit electrical specifications and select equipment, electrical systems and devices.
  • Assist with designs for upgrades, expansions of medium voltage and low voltage distribution, and green field design.
  • Prepare electrical design (plans and specifications) for projects per NFPA 70 requirements to include various systems such as switchgear, pumping plants, pumps, lighting, HVAC, fire protection detection and suppression panels, and other miscellaneous loads.
  • Engineering of physical design (above & below grade) for conduit and cable routing in sufficient detail to construct.
  • Produce drawings, markups, back check for electrical equipment​conduit arrangement drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Specify conduit and cable, prepare calculations to support the design.
  • Perform site surveys and verification of installation.
  • Perform power system studies, including arc flash assessment.
  • Perform engineering calculations, make recommendations to develop electrical design options, and assist in the preparation of engineering procedures and specifications.
  • Perform data processing and statistical analysis, development of data plots and graphs.
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance.
  • Coordinate workload to complete the document on schedule.
  • Conduct work sessions at the project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines.
  • Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs and change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents.
  • Provide construction contract administration as needed.
  • Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Electrical Engineers, Electrical Coordinators or Technicians.
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in electrical design of buildings (lighting/power/systems)
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm desired
  • Experience and/or interest in sustainable design/LEED desired but not required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an Electrical emphasis
  • Previous experience in electrical design of buildings (lighting/power/systems)
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Strong computer skills using AutoCAD and Microsoft Office, Revit, SKM, AGI and Easy Power
