Job description

Thanks for your interest in Oklo! We are searching for an experience Electrical Engineer to join our engineering team and support delivery of the Aurora powerhouse at Idaho National Laboratory.

Position Description

The Electrical Engineer will serve as a key owner-side technical lead, coordinating electrical design and execution across Oklo teams, EPC partners, equipment vendors, and construction.

This role is focused on delivering complete, coordinated, and constructible electrical systems, not designing in isolation. The successful candidate will take ownership of electrical scope, resolve interfaces and design inputs, review EPC and vendor deliverables, and drive issues to closure in support of procurement, construction, commissioning, and plant operation.

The successful candidate must be comfortable joining an active project where major design and procurement decisions may already be established and developing practical, technically sound solutions within those constraints.

Specific responsibilities may include:
  • Provide owner-side technical leadership for Aurora-INL electrical systems, including:
  • Own electrical scope from design development through procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Coordinate electrical work performed by EPC partners and equipment vendors, ensuring responsibilities and interfaces are clearly defined.
  • Establish, review, and maintain electrical design criteria, requirements, calculations, specifications, drawings, and equipment data.
  • Review electrical studies, including load flow, short-circuit, protective-device coordination, arc-flash, grounding, and other applicable analyses.
  • Verify that electrical requirements and design inputs are consistently incorporated across drawings, specifications, studies, vendor packages, and construction documents.
  • Lead resolution of technical questions, RFIs, design changes, nonconformances, and field issues.
  • Support equipment procurement by developing technical requirements, reviewing vendor proposals and submittals, and resolving vendor interfaces.
  • Work closely with project management and scheduling teams to identify priorities, dependencies, risks, and decisions affecting delivery.
  • Work effectively in a progressive design-build environment where engineering, procurement, and construction activities overlap.
  • Support constructability reviews, installation planning, inspections, testing, commissioning, and operations.
  • Promote practical, solutions-oriented collaboration while maintaining safety, quality, and technical rigor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.
  • Eight or more years of progressively responsible electrical engineering experience, including significant experience with power-generation electrical systems.
  • Experience with facility power distribution, emergency power, grounding, electrical equipment, and electrical studies.
  • Experience reviewing engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and vendor submittals.
  • Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, including IEEE standards and relevant building and fire codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate work across multiple engineering disciplines, contractors, and vendors.
  • Strong ownership, organization, communication, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and close issues in a fast-paced project environment with evolving design information.
  • Ability to succeed in a startup-like environment by working through process gaps, ambiguity, and evolving information without allowing administrative obstacles to stall progress.
  • Ability to develop practical near-term solutions that protect the construction schedule while simultaneously improving processes for future execution, without compromising safety, quality, or technical requirements.
  • Ability to travel to project offices, vendor facilities, and the Aurora-INL construction site.
Bonus Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain one.
  • Experience with nuclear or DOE-regulated facilities, including exposure to the additional electrical requirements associated with regulated nuclear facilities.
  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible electrical engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting EPC, progressive design-build execution, and field construction.
  • Experience using ETAP for electrical system analysis, protective-device coordination, and arc-flash studies; CDEGS for grounding studies; and Bluebeam for design and construction document reviews.
  • Experience with switchyard design and high-voltage utility coordination.
  • Experience with commissioning, startup, or turnover of industrial electrical systems.
We are looking for a Electrical Engineer that is:
  • Passionate about clean energy
  • Passionate about making advanced fission a reality
  • Willing and able to learn quickly
  • Eager to work on a dynamic team, receive constructive feedback, and grow with us
  • Willing to think differently and do things in new ways
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, highly iterative startup environment
  • Excited to think creatively, critically, and reflectively about the problems they are solving, while not leaning only on what has been done before
  • Willing to propose novel and creative solutions to technical problems
  • An excellent writer who can write in modern active voice, so make your cover letter compelling and write it well!
  • Able to communicate technical content and results verbally
Who you are:

A startup person : You aren't driven by titles or hierarchy, and prefer efficiency to excess process. You don't need or expect to have a lot of guidance but you enjoy working in a fast-paced team. If you prefer the culture and feel of a large organization, that is great, but you likely won’t enjoy working with us! There is plenty of important work and plenty of good opportunities with organizations like that.

Motivated: You are self-motivated. You bring an enthusiasm to the team, and imbue a sense of passion that goes beyond clocking in and clocking out. This isn’t about a fake or arbitrary “pieces of flair” mentality or lack of work-life balance! It is about being a part of the vision and feeling a part of reaching team goals.

A team-player: Oklo genuinely is a team. We aren’t about taking credit for ourselves, and we aren’t about pushing blame to others. We do incredible things because we work as a team.

An excellent communicator: We need a person who is not only technically competent but also a clear and upbeat communicator.

Creative: Being creative means that when things fall outside clear scopes or processes or problems arise without clear solutions, you are able to identify it as well as invent ways to solve a problem or fill a need without micromanagement. The successful person in this job will not only be creative, but also enjoy being creative and solving open-ended problems which may change day-by-day.

Detail-oriented: This focus is a big part of excellence, consistency, and quality. Excellent grammar and spelling matter for both good communication as well as the image of the company that we put forward.

Oklo requires remote employees to travel to headquarters (Santa Clara, CA) twice a quarter annually, based on business or team needs, including attendance at team meetings, off-sites, and other company events or gatherings. For the first two weeks of onboarding, employees are required to be in person at headquarters in Santa Clara, CA.

Oklo offers flexible time off, equity, bonuses, competitive pay, 401(k), health insurance (with employer contribution), HSA, FSA, flexible work hours, wellness credits, and other benefits.

This position may involve access to information subject to U.S. export control laws. Only applicants who meet the definition of a U.S. person under applicable laws may be eligible.
