Job summary

Metra Commuter Rail is seeking an Electrical Engineer II to design electrical packages for power and lighting systems across Metra facilities. You will supervise construction activities and coordinate with external consultants while preparing cost estimates and project schedules.

The role requires a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, 5 years' related experience in power/lighting design, and 3 years of indirect supervisory responsibilities. Flexible hours and driving may be required.

Qualifications

  • Five years of Electrical Engineering experience with emphasis on power, lighting, and control design.
  • Three years of indirect supervisory experience including task assignment, training and performance monitoring.

The final salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications. Those with 8 years or more of required experience can expect offers up to the midpoint of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidates can consider their growth potential.

Salary Range

$78,627.00 - $117,941.00

The final salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications. Those with 8 years or more of required experience can expect offers up to the midpoint of the salary range. Qualified veterans who meet the minimum requirements will receive outreach during the recruitment process in accordance with Federal and State laws, including the Illinois Veterans Preference Act. Reporting directly to the Director of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Design, the Electrical Engineer II will prepare the electrical design packages (drawings, specifications and technical calculations) for power and lighting systems and ensure compliance for all Metra facilities. Supervise and coordinate activities of construction contract contractors and provide guidance and supervision for design projects prepared by outside consultants. Provide capital and maintenance project cost estimates and cost studies to determine accuracy and cost effectiveness of the designs. Develop project and construction schedules. Prepare the scope of work and complete Grant Development's project request forms to insure adequate funding for proposed capital projects. This position is issued a cellular phone. Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late, afternoon, evenings, or weekends. Must be able to operate a vehicle. Perform other related duties as needed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Requirements
  • Must have Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • In addition to #1, must have five (5) years experience in the Electrical Engineering field with emphasis in the design of electrical power, lighting, and control .
  • Three (3) years of indirect supervisory experience that includes three of the following responsibilities: day-to-day employee management, assigning tasks, providing guidance and training, monitoring performance, dispute resolution, budgeting, hiring, disciplinary and/or termination.
Preferences
  • Railroad experience and knowledge of the 1500VDC traction power system is preferred.
  • Expertise with construction methods and able to assist in construction management activities such as site preparation, construction inspection and supervision, problem resolution, construction safety and knowledge of train operations.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, preferably Word and Excel.
  • Have a working knowledge of AUTOCADD or MicroStations operations.
  • Experience using ADOBE CS3 is preferred.
  • Effective verbal, written, and inter-personal skills to work with various engineering departments, utilities, freight railroads and governmental agencies.
  • Maintain a current valid driver’s license.
