Job summary

N3B Los Alamos is hiring an Electrical Engineer I to support the design team in Los Alamos, NM. You will work on transformer sizing, power panels, VFDs and related diagrams under supervisor guidance.

The role combines on-site and office work, with opportunities to learn NEC codes, perform load-flow studies, and develop safe, reliable electrical power systems. U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a security clearance are required.

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary:

N3B is currently seeking early career Electrical Engineer 1 to support the design team by performing the duties related to the successful completion and delivery of projects and tasks. Assignments typically include a mixture of on-site and office duties. The successful candidate will be exposed to all phases of project development and have the ability to understand and apply the NEC to industrial electrical systems. The activities you will be supporting may include the design and/or sizing of transformers, power panels, control panels and VFD’s. Project design documentation may include system layouts and sizing, one-lines, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, and transformer sizing to name a few. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required as well as the ability to multi-task and work independently and in a team.

While working to achieve N3B objectives, the successful candidate will: ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner through maintaining required safety, security, and operational training. Making safety, security and quality an integral part of every task including taking the necessary steps to pause or stop work as necessary to ensure the safety and security personnel and the job site.

Responsibilities/ Duties (may include, but are not limited to):
  • Support field investigations or assessments. Collect data and gather information or documents. Perform standard computations or analysis. Prepare drawings and visual aids.
  • Perform electrical design modeling to develop safe and reliable electrical power system designs including protection requirements.
  • Apply prescribed techniques and procedures in accordance with established criteria to perform assigned tasks.
  • Familiarity of system protection functions and controls in industrial power systems at low voltages (less than 1000v).
  • Assist in the design of various electrical engineering activities which include but not limited to plan production, system layouts, system details, and one-line diagrams for lighting, power, security, and telecommunications systems designs.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and use SKM system analysis software.
  • Selection of electrical equipment to meet the system requirements
  • Participate with the writing and the production of project reports, forms, policies and procedures.
  • Work under the direct guidance and mentorship of senior engineers.
Education and Experience Required:

Level 1: Bachelors in Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or related fields from an ABET-accredited college or university. Experience with load flow, short circuit analysis, and arc flash hazards system analysis software is a plus.

Level 2: Bachelors in Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or related fields from an ABET-accredited college or university and 3 years of experience. Experience with load flow, short circuit analysis, and arc flash hazards system analysis software is a plus.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment with occasional field work. Electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated. Minor hazards normally found in a northern New Mexico field data collection environment are anticipated. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Office and field work environment.

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Electrical Engineer I/II will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security. Ability to obtain an L level Department of Energy security clearance.
