Job description

The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is a state‑of‑the‑art, medium‑energy (3‑gigavolt) electron storage ring that produces x‑rays up to 10,000 times brighter than the NSLS. Its mission is to provide extremely bright x‑rays for basic and applied research in biology, medicine, materials, chemical sciences, geosciences, environmental sciences, and nanoscience. To support this program, the NSLS-II must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, and focus electron and X‑ray beams.

Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering support for all aspects of accelerator beam position monitors and other beam diagnostics instrumentation.
  • Work with high‑level software programmers to develop support code and applications.
  • Interface with technical experts from other groups to facilitate operations.
  • Work with other engineers and technicians to achieve group goals.
  • Debug and maintain the repair of existing hardware.
  • Plan for scheduled maintenance and shut‑down activities.
  • Maintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • BSEE in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 7 years experience with design, fabrication, integration, and implementation of electronic systems.
  • Experience with FPGA firmware development (VHDL or Verilog).
  • Knowledge of at least one higher‑level programming language (Python, C++, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of design and implementation of digital and analog circuits.
  • Use of test and measurement equipment, including oscilloscope, network, spectrum, logic analyzers, signal generators, and AWG.
  • Ability to read schematics, diagrams, written procedures, spreadsheets, and controls interface documents.
  • Hands‑on troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience processing test records and inspection reports.
  • Willingness to accommodate operational requirements, including response to off‑hour calls to support a 24/7 accelerator facility.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience with design, fabrication, integration, and implementation of electronic systems.
  • Proficiency with Xilinx ISE, Xilinx Vivado, Altera Quartus, or similar tool suites.
  • Ability to develop subsystem test strategies and system readiness procedures.
  • Knowledge of PLC‑based subsystem applications.
  • Experience using PADS PCB layout, PADS Logic, and dxDesigner schematic capture, OrCAD capture, PSpice, A/D, LabVIEW, Visio, and Autodesk products.
  • Experience with FPGA IP cores, Xilinx Zynq, fiber‑optic data transceivers, and serial device communication (RS‑232, RS‑485, ModBus, GPIB).
  • Comfortable with LINUX/UNIX.
  • Familiarity with EPICS software and CS‑Studio/Phoebus control system studio.
  • Familiarity with revision control.
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements
  • Must be safety‑conscious and able to follow detailed written procedures.
  • Lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Continuous walking/standing; climb a ladder and work at heights up to 10 feet.
Legal, Credentialing Requirements

The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE UPIV credential in accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 requirements. This credential will be obtained as part of onboarding and is required to access DOE facilities and information systems.
