Job summary

Leidos is seeking an Electrical Engineer in San Diego, CA to design and prototype embedded hardware for rugged ocean systems. You’ll work with a multidisciplinary team on circuit boards, sensors, batteries, and power supplies, from concept to prototype to demonstration.

The role requires a Bachelor’s or Master’s in EE, 5+ years in circuit design and CAD, and the ability to obtain a SECRET clearance. Onsite 9/80 schedule with occasional marine vessel work may be involved.

Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen required.
  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.
  • Ability to obtain a SECRET security clearance (preferred active clearance).
  • 5+ years of circuit design and CAD layout experience (Altium, OrCAD, PADS).
  • 5+ years of detailed design and prototyping of electronic components.
  • Knowledge of electronics fabrication and assembly.
  • Familiarity with configuration control.
  • Experience in analog and digital circuit board design, layout, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Experience in microcontroller firmware design and testing (C preferred).
  • Experience in FPGA firmware design and testing (VHDL preferred).
  • Experience in embedded DSP.
  • Experience in Linux kernel device driver development.
  • Experience in fiber-optics hardware design and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Identify engineering challenges and recommend component/system designs.
  • Design, prototype, and test system components with project teams.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary team to integrate prototypes into full systems.
  • Contribute to component- and system-level testing throughout development.
  • Research and test to understand and correct design/manufacturing flaws.

Job description

General program information and/or position overview:

The Undersea Systems Division at Leidos currently has an opening for an Electrical Engineer in San Diego, CA. Candidate will join a fast-paced team working to design and prototype embedded hardware for rugged ocean systems. Candidate will collaborate with a team of engineers to design and prototype embedded hardware, firmware, and software, and will be directly involved in design, development, and testing of system components, including circuit boards, analog and digital sensors, batteries, and power supplies. Hardware design and layout experience are greatly desired. Candidates will be able to contribute to the team at all stages of design and prototyping, from initial concept development to rapid design and testing efforts, as well as supporting manufacture of engineering prototype systems and planning and executing real-world demonstrations for customers.


This position will require the candidate to maintain a Secret Clearance.


This position will require the candidate to work an onsite 9/80B schedule (80 hours of work into nine days over a two-week period, allowing for every other Friday off) to align with the NIWC government team.


Primary Responsibilities


  • Identify engineering challenges and recommend component and/or system designs to solve them

  • Design, prototype, and test system components in collaboration with project leads and team members

  • Work within multi-disciplinary team of ocean, mechanical, material, and acoustic engineers to successfully integrate prototype components into full-scale engineering prototype systems

  • Contribute to component-level and system-level testing throughout development

  • Conduct research and testing as needed to understand and then correct component-level design and manufacturing flaws when they are found

  • Develop and maintain design and manufacturing documentation and procedures

  • Mentor early-career electrical engineers assigned to the engineering team


Basic Qualifications


  • U.S. Citizen

  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.

  • Ability to obtain a SECRET security clearance, or (preferred) an active SECRET security clearance.

  • 5+ years of experience in circuit design and CAD layout software (Altium Designer, OrCAD, PADS, etc.).

  • 5+ years of experience in detailed design and prototyping of electronic components.

  • Knowledge of electronics fabrication and assembly.

  • Familiarity with basic configuration control.

  • Experience in one or more of the following design areas:

  • Analog and digital circuit board circuit design, layout, manufacturing, and testing.

  • Microcontroller firmware design and test (C preferred)

  • FPGA firmware design and test (VHDL preferred)

  • Embedded digital signal processing (DSP)

  • Linux kernel device driver development

  • Fiber-optics hardware design and test

  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret complex technical documents.

  • Ability to communicate complex ideas orally and visually.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio).

  • Proficiency in Electrical CAD software.

  • Requires frequent movement around piers, docks, and facility spaces.

  • Requires ability to transport or lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds across the facility.

  • Requires use of hands to operate machinery, tools, or computer equipment.

  • Requires ability to move about the warehouse, stoop, kneel, or reach for extended periods.

  • Ability to climb ladders up to 20 feet.

  • Able and willing to work aboard marine vessels of various sizes, sometimes overnight.

  • Requires work in various temperatures and inclement weather.

  • Required to work in /or around loud production environments.

  • DC power supplies

  • Oscilloscopes

  • Logic analyzers

  • Vendor specific programmers or debuggers

Pay Range

Pay Range $87,100.00 - $157,450.00
