GEM Technologies, Inc. is seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN. The role involves designing and evaluating industrial electrical power systems and ensuring reliable, code-compliant installations.

The candidate will conduct research, analyze complex issues, perform field walkdowns, and develop practical, technically sound solutions for both existing facilities and new construction projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with Industrial Power background and 5+ years of relevant experience.
• U.S. citizenship is required for federal work.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a government clearance, if needed.
• Experience performing electrical system design, design reviews, and design recovery for existing facilities and new construction projects.
• Experience with industrial electrical power distribution systems, including mainline primary power.
• Experience designing facility electrical systems rated 480V and below.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our team supporting the DOE's Y-12 National Security Complex! This position is full-time and will be based out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Responsibilities

• Ability to conduct technical research, analyze complex engineering issues, and develop effective solutions.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to research, evaluate, and resolve complex technical challenges.
• Ability to research technical requirements, analyze engineering data, and develop practical, technically sound solutions.
• Ability to independently evaluate complex technical issues, identify potential solutions, and provide well-supported engineering recommendations.
• Aptitude with demonstrated capabilities in research, analysis, troubleshooting, and engineering problem resolution.

Requirements

• Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with Industrial Power background and 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
• Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.
• Experience performing electrical system design, design reviews, and design recovery for existing facilities and new construction projects.
• Strong experience with industrial electrical power distribution systems, including mainline primary power.
• Experience designing facility and building electrical systems rated 480V and below.
• Ability to address electrical engineering problems of varying scope and technical complexity.
• Experience conducting field walkdowns/site evaluations to document existing electrical system configurations and field conditions.
• Ability to perform design recovery and engineering evaluations of existing electrical systems.
• Proficiency in performing electrical engineering calculations to support system design and modification.
• Experience developing technical specifications, design documentation, and engineering reports.
• Ability to develop and review electrical drawings, technical details, and design packages.
• Experience researching vendor information, equipment specifications, technical references, and existing system data.
• Knowledge of electrical equipment selection and application for industrial and facility power systems.
• Ability to perform constructability and operability reviews of electrical designs.
• Understanding of maintenance, inspection, accessibility, and lifecycle considerations when developing electrical system designs.
• Ability to evaluate existing electrical infrastructure and develop appropriate modifications, upgrades, or replacement designs.
• Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and industry design practices, including NFPA 70/National Electrical Code (NEC).
• Ability to coordinate technical issues with subject matter experts, engineers, designers, operations, maintenance, and construction personnel.
• Ability to independently develop high-quality, technically accurate, and constructible electrical design solutions for industrial facility applications.

About the Site

The NNSA's Y-12 National Security Complex, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is the nation’s only source of enriched uranium nuclear weapon components and provides enriched uranium for the U.S. Navy as well as excels in materials science, precision manufacturing, and stores enriched uranium. Y-12 supports efforts to reduce nuclear proliferation risk and performs work for other government agencies (energy.gov).
